Review: Paul Penders Holy Basil Conditioning Scalp Toner

Paul Penders Holy Basil Conditioning Scalp Toner 180ml AUD 38.50

I have the tendency to invest in quite a number of products for my hair because I do have a history of getting itchy scalp and those annoying dandruff. In my previous post, I reviewed a shampoo that worked pretty well for me to counter the 2 problems. As usual, I like to take a step further to improve the condition of my scalp and this brings me to my purchase of the product above.

I came to know about this when I was trying out some products from Paul Penders and when I was surfing through their site, this looked pretty interesting and lead me to purchase this together with some other products.

My Experience

The product itself is watery and comes in a sturdy plastic bottle, with a small opening, alike any toner bottle. When I first use the product, I find that getting the product out to your fingers can be a little troublesome. If I pour too much, it tends to spill on the floor. If I pour too little, it almost leave me to zero. What I did was transfer some of the product to a mini spray bottle and it makes life so much easier. So to the people at PP, hope that you will re-consider the packaging.

The scalp toner smells a bit minty and fresh, and does give you a little 'soothing' feeling when you massage the product unto the scalp. In the first week, there was little improvement. My scalp does feel itchy still but sebum production seemed to normalise. After 2 weeks, I noticed a significant reduction in my dandruff and my scalp itch much less than before. ( Do bear in mind that I was using my shampoo from Phyto and PP Jasmine shampoo at the same time ) After a month of using this together with the two shampoos, I am glad to say that my dandruff is cleared almost 90% and my scalp did not itch anymore.

I did a little 'experiment' by not washing my hair for 3 days and I was surprised to find that there was no irritation on my scalp. Plus, there was significantly less oil on the roots of my hair. How great is it!

Too good to be true? Well....after experiencing good hair days for 2 months, sadly, my dandruff came back. So, I can't say that this product left me with a much healthier scalp, though it does control the oil production pretty well.

Overall

I can't say that this product is all good..and I can't say that it is all bad either. It helps in balancing the sebum production, but it does nothing to prevent my dandruff. Sigh!

This item was purchased by me for my personal purposes. This review is based on my honest and personal experience with this product and is not influenced by any parties.

  1. Those pesky dandruff. I don't have dandruff but itchy scalp which I managed to get it itch-less with lavender and rosemary EO mixed with camelia oil. Couple times a week i rinse my scalp/hair with diluted apple cider vinegar. After the ACV rinse, I feel my scalp and hair feels so much cleaner and not dry.

    1. Hi Dawn:)) I once rubbed some lavender EO on my scalp, which I thought would help. Though it was relaxing at first, it made my scalp itchy and the dandruff was worse. However, I've heard a lot about apple cider rinse and will definitely try it out! Thanks Dawn. Hugs!
