Review: Paul Penders Products

A few months ago, I was given an opportunity to try out some products from Paul Penders. I have heard of Paul Penders two years ago and was rather intrigued but never really gotten the chance to try out their products. Now that these products were sent to me for review purposes, boy, I was glad!

Now, a little background about Paul Penders taken from their site:

Time-Release Jasmine Shampoo 200ml AU$25.00

Product Information

Paul Penders Time Release Shampoo is a unique approach to washing the hair based on organic olive oil as cleansing agent and where the shampoo foams only minimally when applied to the scalp. After some water is added it 'breaks open' to release a gentle foam for cleansing the hair that ensures shiny hair and a clean, healthy scalp. For people who like the feel of foam they can wash a 2nd time with only a minimal amount of shampoo and foam appears. Contrary to mass-produced chemical shampoos, Paul Penders Time-Release Jasmine Shampoos produce only a small amount of foam. It leaves hair shiny, soft and free of flyaway strands.

Ingredients:

Water,Sodium PEG-7 Olive Oil Carboxylate, Decyl Glucoside, Glycerin, Sodium Alginate, Organic LevensESSENTIE Gold™ { Angelica (Angelica Archangelica) Extract, Arnica (Arnica Montana) Extract, Calendula(Calendula Officinalis) Flower Extract, Chamomile (Matricaria Recutita) Flower Extract, Elderflower( Sambucus Nigra) Flower Extract, Ginger (Zingiber Officinalis) Root Extract, Ginseng Root (Panax Quinquefolium) Extract, Honeysuckle (Lonicera Japonica) Extract, Hops (Humulus Lupulus) Extract, Horsetail (Equeisetum Hyemale) Extract, Juniper (Juniperus Communis) Fruit Extract, Lavender (Lavendulavera) Flower Extract, Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) Extract, Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Extract, Pegaga (Centella Asiatica ) Extract, Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) Leaf Extract, Rosemary (Rosemarinus Officinalis) Extract, Sage(Salvia Officinalis) Extract, St.Johns Wort (Hypericum Perforatum) Extract, Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) Root Extract, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) Extract, Yarrow (Archillea Millefolium) Extract }, Chamomile (Matricaria Recutita) Flower Oil , Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Extract , Sorbic Acid, D-Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Essential Oil of Orange (Citrus Aurantium Dulcis), Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis), Essential Oil of Jasmine (Jasminum Officinale), Soybean Oil (Glycine Soja), Vitamin C (L.Ascorbic Acid), Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis) Seed Extract, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E).

My Experience

The product itself a clear gel with medium consistency and has a refreshing and clean scent, which smells good. My normal routine in washing my hair is usually two times, beginning at my scalp and secondly from scalp to hair ends.

Like all natural based shampoo, this shampoo does not foam much, which is great to know because it is an indication that it does not contain any additional surfactants. Only in my second wash, I do see some small amount of foam, but much less than the other natural shampoos that I have used.

My hair and scalp does feel clean, although my hair does feel a little course after use. Follow up with a conditioner will be ideal in this case. I like that this shampoo does not make my hair limp and control the oil production pretty well. However, that being said, I do feel occasional itch at times.

Overall, I feel that shampoo performs pretty well for my hair and I have since bought a 2nd bottle!

Pegaga Scalp Cleansing Treatment 120g AU$29.50

Product Information

Beautiful hair starts with a healthy scalp! Pegaga Scalp Cleansing Treatment naturally treats irritated and flaking scalps. Pegaga (traditionally known as "Miracle Hero of the Rainforest") and tea-tree oil both possess remarkable antiseptic and antibacterial qualities to deep-cleanse and revitalize the scalp. Helps control itching and eliminates flaking.

Ingredients:

Water, Glycerin, Pegaga (Centella Asiatica) Extract, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Extract , Kukui Nut (Aleuritus Moluccana) Oil , Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Organic LevensESSENTIE Gold™ { Angelica (Angelica Archangelica) Extract, Arnica (Arnica Montana) Extract, Calendula(Calendula Officinalis) Flower Extract, Chamomile (Matricaria Recutita) Flower Extract, Elderflower( Sambucus Nigra) Flower Extract, Ginger (Zingiber Officinalis) Root Extract, Ginseng Root (Panax Quinquefolium) Extract, Honeysuckle (Lonicera Japonica) Extract, Hops (Humulus Lupulus) Extract, Horsetail (Equeisetum Hyemale) Extract, Juniper (Juniperus Communis) Fruit Extract, Lavender (Lavendulavera) Flower Extract, Lemon Balm ( Melissa Officinalis) Extract, Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Extract, Pegaga ( Centella Asiatica ) Extract, Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) Leaf Extract, Rosemary (Rosemarinus Officinalis) Extract, Sage( Salvia Officinalis) Extract, St.Johns Wort (Hypericum Perforatum) Extract, Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) Root Extract, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) Extract, Yarrow (Archillea Millefolium) Extract }, Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis) Seed Extract, ,Sorbic Acid, Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis) Oil , Essential oil of Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia), Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Vitamin C (L. Ascorbic Acid).

My Experience

As per the instruction given on the box, this product is to be massage into the scalp leaving it for 30 minutes. Honestly, I find that the instruction given was too vague until I have to contact the marketing person for more info! She advised me to apply the product on wet scalp instead.

I apply the product, section by section unto my damp scalp, gently massage it in, then cover with a shower cap and leave it in for 30 minutes. I find that it has a strong medicinal scent to it, which some may not like. I know that am one that is not so keen on the smell, but for beauty sake, I am willing to accept it. During the waiting period, I felt that some areas of my scalp do feel itchy. I assume that the product is working its way in as this product has some antiseptic and antibacterial qualities for deep cleansing.

However, the medicinal smell still lingers, despite after rinsing and shampooing. That being said however, my scalp does feel light and revitalized after use. I do see less oily scalp, less itch and dandruff during the first 2 uses of this product ( which I use this treatment twice a week ) but then.....on the 3rd use, I started to have LOTS of tiny flakes! My hair has been flake free and was surprised I developed it again after using this treatment. I was petrified and contact the representative from Paul Penders!

Their answer given was that flakes could be due to the cleansing process and it should stop after a few uses. I continued on for a month but sadly, the flakes did not go away and it was embarrassing. I have to buy another hair treatment/shampoo product to deal with the issue.:(

My Experience

This cleanser itself is pasty and rather thick and concentrated, quite different from all the cleansing milk I've used before. I was surprised and pleased too that you only need a pea size for the entire face. This means that a little goes a long way.

I was having my acute eczema problems at the time of use and I was scared that using a new product might further irritate the sensitive area. On second thoughts, this is a good time to test if this product is really good for dry and sensitive skin as it claimed. True enough, it did not irritate my sensitive area and skin one bit! I love it that this cleansing milk does not leave any oily residue ( unlike Eucerin ) and the scent is very refreshing.

My face feels incredibly comfortable each time after use, leaving my face feeling clean, soft and smooth. I really love this and this is clearly a winner to me! I have since made my second purchase. ( This time, the consistency is less 'pasty' than the sample, but product is still thick )

Overall

I am surprised and impressed at the same time by some of the products, mainly because of the premium ingredients that they use. Most of the products are rather concentrated and a little does goes a long way! The only thing that I wish to gripe is the lack of detailed instructions for each product. Each product comes with a folded leaflet inside the box, which explains the use of their core ingredient, LevensESSENTIE Gold and instructions for another product, which is not related to the actual product itself. That being said however, I did enjoy using some of the products provided by the good folks at Paul Penders and do check their products out at www.paulpenders.com.au.

These items were sent to me by PR for review consideration. This review is based on my honest and personal experience with this product and is not influenced by any parties.

  1. You have provided such a very nice review about these Paul Penders products. At least I know the benefits it can give me and my love ones in case we use it. I'd probably try the scalp treatment one of these days. By the way, have you already made a review about this supplement: http://products.mercola.com/chlorella/. My doctor actually recommended it a couple of weeks ago and I'd just like to know some feedback.

    1. Hi Valerie! Yeah, some of their products are pretty good, having tried them for a few months.

Unfortunately, I only have tried the chlorella from Lifestream. Link: http://myorganicjourney11.blogspot.com/2012/04/review-lifestream-chlorella.html
You can read my thoughts about it though I may add that you seek an advise from your practitioner about taking any supplements.

  2. Hi Valerie
thanks for a wonderful and most honest review of a few of our Paul Penders products. I really admire you for the time you have taken to get to a true opinion. We learned from your comments by the way and thank you for that.
I also wish to bring here that the issue of dandruff is a difficult one and for some people the usual over the counter dandruff shampoos are the ones for them to remedy their problem. However in your case, it's a pity our people in Australia didn't mention that you should have added another product; the scalp toner; in fact, both products would work "double" so to say.
You also may be little bit allergic to one of the natural (even organic) ingredients as well. I am not sure. That is what I wanted to say and happy to get you a bottle of the scalp toner (please ask the people in Australia) and think you would get better results!
Again thank you for your nice review.
    With warm regards
    paul penders
