Secrets to A Glorious Mane

Keeping your scalp healthy
Image taken from limcorp.net

I recently went to a new hairdressing salon for a wash and I got to know one of the senior stylist there. He is very opinionated ( in a good way.. ) and is one of the first stylist that examined my hair scalp in a microscopic manner before washing my hair!

He first asked me how often I wash my hair and what type of shampoo that I use. He gave me a new revelation, that the tiny flakes that I experience is not dandruff...instead it is a accumulation of dirt and oil. He further explained that dandruff are big flakes, where else mine is small. Below are some images that I've  found:

More often than not, when we experience itchy scalp or dry flakes in the hair, many people believe that they are suffering from dandruff where in actual fact, it is not necessarily the issue.

I gathered my issue with flakes and itchiness, coupled with hair shedding is caused by:

1) Oily scalp
2) Not washing my hair frequently ( Though I usually wash my hair on alternate days, somedays, I may further extend to 2 days )
3) Not using the proper shampoo.

The stylist mentioned that all the issues that I am experiencing can be resolved by having a good healthy scalp. The way?By having deep scalp cleansing treatments every 1 1/2 months. He actually has a point to it.

I remembered that last year, I did a scalp cleansing treatment and my scalp felt so revitalised and light. My flakes and itchiness were gone after the treatment! I was having good hair days for months and sadly, it came back again. And I knew now that if I were to go for cleansing treatments frequently, my scalp would not have suffered much.

So after having looked at a new light at my hair condition, below are the list that I know I would do:

1) Invest in a ( natural based ) clarifying shampoo and use it alternately with my normal shampoo to stabilize my oily scalp.

2) Wash my hair frequently.

3) Use cold water to rinse my hair. The stylist advised me that using cold water to rinse is always better than hot because it is always better for the scalp.

4) Going for deep scalp cleansing treatment every 2 months to really deep cleanse all the way down to the shafts and remove build ups.

So, to anyone who might be experiencing the same issue like me, it may be a good time to look into striving for healthy scalp instead of using temporal ways to mask the real issue.
