After repurchasing my 7th bottle of this cleanser, I knew it's about time for me to post this review of my all-time and STAPLE cleanser. Now, I know some of you might say " Dermalogica...again?". I know...I know, this brand seems to be not as appealing as other brands in the market. Probably one of the reasons is that it has been in the market for years and some have grown tired of hearing about this brand...again.

In all honesty, when I was first introduced to this brand, I wasn't that keen. First was the packaging. It didn't appeal to me as much as the apothecary styled bottles like Aesop or MVO. Those just automatically shout out " Buy me! Buy me!" from the shelves. Well...for this, it was like..boring and meh.

Secondly, it is expensive. I usually go for cleansers that is priced below MYR 50. Yes, I did indulged in Aesop cleansers before but paying above MYR 200 for a cleanser is way over the top for me. Because I needed to see changes on my skin, I bulked and purchased some other products when I signed up with their facial programme. Now let's look at what this product have to say...

My Experience

I usually use this cleanser at the second step, right after rinsing off my cleansing milk to make sure my skin is clean from any residue. This cleanser is extremely gentle, it doesn't foam and has a very light calming scent. It doesn't dry up my skin and it is just perfect to use for sensitive skin type like mine.

I must say that this cleanser really helped me during the time when I had an allergic reaction from testing a new product. Because of the flare up, my skin became uber sensitive and I was surprised that when I use this cleanser, it didn't burn or sting me. It just calms my skin well. Now, that really tells how gentle this cleanser is.

Overall

This cleanser won me over by its gentleness and effectiveness. I would always look forward to clean my face using this and so far, you can say that I am contented. Though this cleanser is pricey, I don't know why I would always come back to this one no matter what. Probably it fits my skin type really well.

One point I would like to note is that I don't make my re-purchases here in Malaysia. Prices here is overly high. For comparison sake, the retail price here is about 25% more than what is selling at strawberry.net. During my previous buying trips in HK, I found a shop that sells 40% less than the retail price in Malaysia and it is original too! Sadly, online shopping is not available and I usually have to ask my friends or my SIL to do the purchases for me if I ran out.

However, pricing issues aside, for those who have issues with skin conditions like sensitivity or acne, or if you want to re-haul your current skincare products even, I think Dermalogica products are pretty reliable and worth looking into. Though their product range is plenty, just make sure that you get your face mapped by their therapist before purchasing. And word of advice, because the price may be pretty steep for some, just buy the essentials. Any add ons can come later. ( I've learned my lesson from my previous experience )

Do you wash your face after rinsing your shampoo?

I am not sure how many of you out there is as particular as me. My hubby says that I am slightly fussily freaky..hehe. Well, I have my reservations and here are my 2 reasons:

Making sure no remaining residue is on my face.

It's no joy when imagining remnants of shampoo, mixed with dirt and grime, slowly sliding down your face during rinsing time. Most of the remnants contains mostly oils, surfactants or sometimes conditioners. Do keep in mind that conditioners or even shampoo contain dimethicone. For natural or organic based products, the ingredient similar to dimethicone called glycol distearate is commonly used.

Dimethicone is a silicon-based polymer used as a lubricant and conditioning agent. Simply put it, this ingredient makes you say "Oh, my hair feels incredibly soft and smooth ". Because it is a conditioning agent, it serves to coat the hair or skin to prevent water loss. Now, to me, it can mean pore clogging. This is not good news.

To avoid pimples

Because dimethicone and other conditioning agents are pore clogging, it can cause breakouts. To me, I would very much like to avoid the big P because my pimple scars usually stays very visible for months. This is one of the reason why I make sure that my skin is cleaned after rinsing and after conditioning my hair.

My Usual Routine

During rinsing time, I would usually tilt my head slightly to the side or back to avoid suds running down my face. In some unavoidable situations, I would usually wash my face with water before towelling dry. Next, I proceed with conditioning my hair with leave on conditioners before blow drying my hair. Even when I blow dry my hair, I would try my best to avoid my hair from touching my face too much.

When all is done, I would wash my face with my cleanser, just to make sure that my face is clean from any oils or residue.

My Experience

This eye gel is unscented ( as mentioned by them ), opaque and consistency is skewed towards runny. Just a little tiny amount of the gel is sufficient enough for both the eye area. What I liked is that I experienced some cooling effect when applied, which soothed my tired eyes.

The sample is good to last me for 2 1/2 weeks and so far, no complaints. It is a pretty decent eye gel and I think it will suit particularly for those who dislike creamy ones. Though it didn't eliminate the fine lines or the dark circles during the time when sampling this, I find that it hydrates my eye area really well. My only gripe is this product is retailing at RM 137 for 15 ml! I feel much comfortable to purchase this if the price is less than RM 60.

Are you washing your hair the proper way?

I am sure many of you would say "Hey, that's easy peesy. Just squirt a good amount of shampoo to the hair, add some water and wash away...". The more it lathers, the cleaner your hair will be, right? Errr...well, more suds doesn't mean it's good for you. The greater it foams means the greater SLS agents are in the products.

Ever since I started switching to more organic or natural based products, one thing I noticed is it does not lather as much as normal drug store ones. Drug store brands typically include more "bubble making" agents to create lather because we all like lathers. Foams or lathers somehow give us an assurance that all the dirt and grime are washed away.

Starting with scalp or hair?

The first step is not to wash your hair, but rather to clean your scalp and remove the sebum ( oil ) and product that has accumulated since you last shampooed your hair. The right way is firstly, emulsify a 50 cent sized amount of shampoo in your hands by rubbing your shampoo between your palms. Apply the shampoo to your semi wet scalp using your fingertips and work the shampoo vigorously into your scalp about 30 seconds. Make sure you work the shampoo into your entire scalp and do not neglect your back.

Rinse

Rinsing do seems easy but most people do not rinse properly, leaving hair with unwanted sebum, product build-up and left over shampoo. A good rule of thumb is to rinse for at least 30 seconds.

Re-shampoo

When using natural or organic shampoo, I usually re-shampoo my hair because my scalp tend to be on an oilier side. I repeat the same routine as I did in the first step, but this time, I use a little less amount of shampoo. This time, work the shampoo into your hair from scalp to ends for at least 30 seconds. Here, you will noticed that the shampoo would lather more than in the first step.

Rinse again

Rinse well for at least 30 seconds. You may rinse longer should you have thicker or longer hair. Just make sure that no shampoo remains in your hair.

I wash my hair on alternate days now and I would usually follow the steps mentioned above by shampooing twice. However, if you wash your hair on a daily basis, you would just need to do the first step but making sure you work from scalp to hair ends.

I have heard loads about this brand, firstly being a pioneer in organic cosmetics and has grown to become one of France's leading brands of natural and organic cosmetics. My Experience

This deodorant comes in a nice frosted glass bottle with a spray. To me, the deodorant itself is like water, scented with mint. They did say it contained rose as well but my nose didn't seemed to pick up the scent. I started using it for day and night since October and to date, this deodorant did nothing for me at all. Coincidentally, that month, I went through a detox programme and sadly, this deodorant did not manage to control the unpleasant smell.

I was pretty upset with this, especially seeing that I've spent MYR 77 on an unimpressive deodorant. I was disappointed and even told the salesgirl about it. This had me thinking, is it me or is it that the deodorant is not suitable for people with my condition?

Overall

There's really nothing for me to mentioned further about this product. If you want me to compare, Moogoo deodorant worked for a longer period than this ..and much cheaper too! Sadly, after 2 months, the Moogoo deodorant stopped working for me as well and I discovered that the rims of the roll on turned moldly. ( I can't bear to even take a picture of it because it is pretty disgusting to look at )

Despite purchasing a product which did not impress me this time, it would not deter me from checking out their skincare ranges because I believe there must be one or two products out there that will work out for me.....

Review: L'occitane Fresh Face Water

It seems that I have an awful lot L'occitane products, do I? In the beginning, I was a fan but started to fade off when the prices started to get increasingly pricey. That said, however, I would always go back, just to get my replenishment of my all time favourite item, which is their Shea Butter Fresh Face Water ( or known as Shea Butter Extra Gentle Cleansing Water ).

A gentle alcohol-free makeup remover that tones skin in one step. For face, eyes and lips. It is adapted to dry skin and respects the fragility of the eye area. Tolerance dermatologically and ophtalmologically tested.

My Experience

I am currently enjoying wearing makeup again after being au natural for a few years. My makeup is pretty simple: just using my tinted sunscreen as my base, topped up with face powders, some eyeshadows, eyeliner and mascara for my eyes and finished off with a healthy blush. Because my makeup is not heavy, this cleansing water is just nice to remove my makeup rather thoroughly.

What I usually do in my daily routine is squirting a sufficient amount of the cleansing water unto my cotton pads, place it on my eye area and gently massage it. I would then proceed to gently wipe my entire face with a fresh cotton pad, soaked with the cleansing water. I would usually repeat 2-3 times until there is no trace of makeup on the cotton pads. After that, I would double cleanse with my milk cleanser and gel cleanser.

Now, the whole routine above may sound like I am over cleansing. Personally, I find that it is not. My face does not feel dry or 'scratched' at all. I also find that using good quality cotton pads is vital so that your skin is handled as gently as possible.

Overall

There may be lots of makeup removers out there but I usually choose those that are non-oily and alcohol free. That is why this cleansing water fits the bill perfectly ( except for the price ). I can't really remember which year that I first started using this but I remember that now, I am already at my 4th bottle! Now, that really speaks of how much that I like this product. What I really love about this is that not only it is great for removing makeup rather thoroughly, it is also moisturizing, which doesn't make my skin feel taut or harsh.

I am questioning the title of my post and hope that you guys out there will share with me if you agree with it.
Now, you must be thinking why do I post this question? Well...here's my story.....

Middle of last year..

I signed up some new facial programs with a newly established facial centre, hoping to ease some of my expenses. The products sounded very promising, where the ingredients are mostly derived from potent natural sources. ( In line with my 2011 resolution to shift to more natural/organic products ) The founder is one reputable and established aesthetician as well. So, I didn't question much when I signed up.

My First Facial with them..

Went normal as usual. However though, I find it odd that they didn't do a thorough skin assessment with me. All they asked me to do is to fill in the questionnaires about my skin condition. ( It should be the other way around, right ). I remember quite correctly that they didn't tell me which type of skin condition am I and proceeded with the facial.

I like facials that are quiet and relaxing but the entire time, they were doing endless promotion of their products. Frustrating but I forgave them because I understand their need to explain to me what products they are using since this is my first time with them. At the end of the facial, I was fine with the results and went home.

Next day....

Well...my reaction is EXACTLY like the picture above...shocked...that I discovered that I was experiencing allergy to the products! I had tiny bumps of rashes along the sides of my nose and chin. I also discovered I had two fresh pimples on my forehead.

I went to see a doctor immediately and was given cortisone cream and some medications to relieve the rashes. After 2 days, the facial centre call to see if I am experiencing positive results from the facial. I told them about my allergy reaction and they only proceeded to ask me what it look like and told me to go back so they can examine. I told them, thanks to my medications, my allergy went off. But you know what, the sad thing is that initially they didn't acknowledge that their products are the one which is causing my allergy and no compensation was even offered.

Because I have already sign some programs with them...

I continued with them. I also discovered that they did a AHA peel on me the first time and that is why I had the allergy. They stopped using that on me now but out of the 5 times I go for the facial, I always have breakouts along the forehead or eyebrows area. This is...without fail! I was petrified to get scarring again and went back to my old facial centre and what a difference, I did not experience any breakouts at all.

Here's the crux of the story...

I told my breakout story to them and the manager came to speak to me. What she explained was that it is normal to have breakouts and it 'termed as a detoxification process'." It is usual to experience that because our products are of high performance and need to purge all out", she says. I was sitting there and was in a little disbelief. ( Initially, they didn't acknowledge that their products are the one which is causing the breakouts and now she's telling me this is a detoxification process ) Mmm...makes me think. She did, however, offered a complimentary treatment, should I experience breakouts again. I just told her blankly that the last thing I want is experiencing breakouts again that will leave me scarred for months. ( I also find out that some customers also experience breakouts too)

Do you agree that experiencing breakouts is detoxification? Or simply put it, the products are just not suitable at all? Would you keep using the product which makes you breakout everytime? Do shed some light....

Review: MVO Rose & Neroli Anti Aging Body Oil

I have been a fan of body oils since last year and it never fails to give me smooth, supple skin every time. I have used Weleda and currently using my DIY body oil, which I love because it is equally as good and cheap too!

Last year, during my MVO hauls, I bought a bottle of their Rose and Neroli body oil mainly because I need to hit the 'free shipping' minimum. I guess it's fine because I use body oils everyday. This one would be considered a 'luxury' for me cos this the most expensive body oil I've purchase to date.

My Experience

Since this is considered a luxury item to me, I use this 3 times a week after shower and mostly after my body scrub. Reason being I use this on the days I do my body scrub because I want all the natural goodies of the oil to sink into my skin fully.

Initially, I wasn't sure if I would like this oil because it stated that it contains over 2 dozen roses for a single drop of oil! I shudder when I think of it. I am not a fan of any rosy scent and I will always chock when I pass by any Lovely Lace shop. ( Lovely Lace is a shop in Malaysia which sells cutesy decorative items and country styled home decorations, which is heavily perfumed with rose scent )

Surprisingly, I don't find this oil being overwhelmed with the rose scent. I can't put my finger to it except that I like it that it leaves me smelling wonderful! Probably the neroli scent has something to do with it too. Everytime I use this, I feel like I am being transported to fields of roses and neroli. Does it make any sense? Well, I think the best way to describe this feeling is, "I feel luxurious"!

Now, on to the consistency. Compared to Weleda and my own DIY body oil, this one wins hands down! Though the oils that I use in my DIY body oil is almost identical to MVO, this one is slightly lighter. It glides well unto my skin, absorbs rather quickly and does not leave my skin feeling greasy. One squirt is sufficient for my arms and 2 for my legs.

Overall

I am pretty impressed with this body oil. The scent and the feel of the oil is great, better than my own DIY. It does what it claims: leave the skin supple, smooth and refine, and prevents moisture loss and dehydration. I love how this oil can sometimes calm and relaxes me before I go to bed...not to mention, it gives you a little 'luxurious' feeling. Though it give me all the good feelings, I can't say that I will repurchase this everytime if it ran out because the price is a little steep for me. I will repurchase this only I have a little extra to spare or at times if I need to pamper myself.

Chinese New Year is just around the corner and I did this little gifts for my clients. I love this Vintage Tin Box and since it's under the theme 'vintage', I added all the old goodies we ate when we were little like the rabbit sweets, lemon drops and haw flakes as snacks. My clients love it! Brings back all the fond memories.

I started using cleansing milk since mid April last year and found it pretty good for my dry skin type. I do have my share of ups and downs while trying out new cleansers. I particularly dislike my first one, which is from Madara and later found a good one from Trilogy. Though I found something that I liked, my wallet is saying something else. Both the cleansers cost me MYR 80-120, which only last me for 4 months with everyday usage.

So the best alternative is look for a budget one, which is drugstore ones! Finding one which does not contain the nasties is hard, I tell ya. After browsing through several brands which claims to be 'dermatologist tested', I stumble upon this one. Though this cleanser is not anywhere near organic, I don't mind this one because the ingredients listed are safe. ( Did another check list in skin deep and all is good )

My Experience

The cleanser is milky white and consistency is semi thick. Like any other milk cleansers, it works well when massaging it gently unto a slightly damp face.

The first thing I noticed is the smell. I like cleansers that smells naturally fresh but this one smells like I am rubbing Rosken or aqua cream unto my face. Smells really 'dermatolo-gic'. This is the best way I can describe it.

In terms of performance, I must say that this cleanser slowly grows on me. It cleanses my skin well without stripping it clean and leaving my skin feeling moisturised. However though, it does leave a slightly oily film. ( Most milk cleansers do anyway ) I do not find this a big issue because I usually double cleanse with a gentle cleanser after this.

Overall

After using it for 2 months plus, I am glad to say this one is a keeper for me. It does not break me out, unlike the Madara cleanser. In fact, I haven't experience any breakout since using this cleanser! This is perfect for those who have similar skin type like mine, slightly dry skin with sensitive skin. This cleanser does not give you any slightest tingling ( I experienced a little of this when using the Madara and Trilogy ).

I have already repurchase a 2nd bottle of this because of the performance and also, my wallet thanked me too! This cleanser gets a 4 out of 5 from me.

Niacinamide- An anti-aging powerhouse ingredient!

I love reading about ingredients in the products that I use because I want to know what kind of benefits of that particular ingredient would do for my skin. Last week, I did a search on this particular ingredient called Niacinamide.

What is Niacinamide?

Known as Vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid, niacinamide is a potent cell-communicating ingredient that offers multiple benefits for aging skin. If anyone were to ask me " If there's one part of your face which you most want to improve, what would it be?" Without giving much further thought, my answer would be my blackhead issue! I have a long history of battling blackheads and I must say that I have very, very stubborn ones indeed on my nose and my chin. I have tried many, many methods: going for facials, oil cleansing, scrubs. These helped only a little by removing only at the surface which is accumulated daily. My blackheads are ingrained deep down in my pores, thus making it very difficult to remove.

I remembered seeing a post from Xin, ( Pretty Beautiful ), which uses Skin Food Egg White Pack and decided to give this a try because the pictures of those blackheads being stuck on the strips is too much for me to resist!

-Remove transparent film, and apply the smooth side of the film to fit the shape of your nose.

-Make sure to place the round edges of the sheet on the tip of the nose.

-Leave for 10 minutes, then tone and moisturize the skin.

Before we move on, I thought that it might be good to show you guys how congested my nose area is.

My Experience

I like that the strips are packed specifically for the nose and the forehead and chin area. Strips are easy to identify. The nose strips are shaped like the Biore ones and triangle for the forehead and chin area.

I used this once I've cleanse my skin. Just apply a tiny amount of water on your nose, forehead and chin area before pasting the strips. Leave it for 10 minutes until the strips hardens. Now comes the best part! Gently peel the strips off and this is what you can see....

This is the nose strips. As you can see, most of the gunk came off especially on the side of my nose and not so much in the middle. ( My nose area is the most congested part ).

Some came off at the forehead area. I didn't take a shot at the chin area because it came out clean.

Overall

I wouldn't say that I am totally impressed with this pack. Probably, it didn't work so well on me because my blackheads are pretty stubborn to start off with. As you can see from the pictures above, all the strips came out pretty clean. Apart from that, I also experience that my nose area became slightly harden a day or two after using it. (Keep in mind that I clean it thoroughly after removing the strip. ) I am not sure if it is just me. Overall, I would only give this pack a rating of 1 out of 5 because it didn't really work for me in removing all the gunk thoroughly for me.

Does constipation causes acne?

For the past few months, I have been experiencing great skin condition. It is properly balanced, well hydrated and has this certain glow too. My pores seems fine too. And best of all, my skin is clear of acne!
( My skin does have a habit of giving me scarred acne and it takes months for it to vanish completely from my skin. ) I was curious to know what can actually contribute to this great condition.

Some of you may know that I have been battling with constipation problem for months. In the month of October, I did a detox programme because I just feel I need to flush out all the toxins that are accumulated within me. ( Sorry for the gross explanation ) This is the 2nd time I did this programme and it never fails to do it's job well.

From that time until now, my skin is looking great and I feel fabulous. Even more so, I am happy to announce too that I have been able to go to the toilet almost everyday. Now, I am wondering, could the detox programmed have helped my skin to be clear of acne?

I did a little research over the net and I found this very interesting article that is related to this post. Here are some excerpts from it.

Acne is a very common skin disorder. Almost 95% of all people suffer from acne at some point in their life. The major cause of acne is because of hormonal fluctuation which every indivisual undergoes during puberty. The hormonal fluctuations can cause the sebaceous gland in the skin to produce excessive sebum which causes the skin to have acne. The other factors that could lead to acne are many these range from poor hygiene to excessive consumption of trans fat in the diet.

Research suggest that constipation can also accelerate and aggravate acne in certain individuals. This is because during constipation, excessive toxins are created in the body which leads to acne out breaks. Thus the people who suffer from constipation have a good chance to get acne.

And yes. This confirms my curiosity.. constipation can lead to acne.

Now, let's look at what I did to keep my skin clear:

1) Detoxification- I did a detox programme that lasts a week. I was following a diet of incorporating lots of vegetables and fruits ( fibers ) and only started to intake protein( chicken or fish ) in the last 4 days of the programme. Along with this, I have to take some fiber drinks from the programme too.

2) Water- Drinking lots of water is so essential and I think that contributed most to my constipation problem was my lack of intake of water. I am forcing myself to drink 2-3 litres of water per day.

3) Bring on the greens..and colours too- Even after the programme, I have been consuming a lot of vegetables and fruits. Not only does it improve my consistency , I know I am getting loads of vitamins and phyto nutrients too that are good for my skin and health.

4) Consume as much fresh food as possible-Eat more fresh veggies, fruits or white meat and eat less boxed, canned and bagged processed foods.

5) Taking probiotics- I personally find that taking yoghurt drinks helps a lot and I find that my bowel movement became more frequent! Research conducted has shown that probiotics is beneficial in treating constipation. The WHO defines probiotics as live micro-organisms that give health benefits. They are friendly and good bacteria that aid your digestive system when you take them.

6) Exercise- Accelerates circulation, which speeds up excretion of waste. My type of exercise is-doing housework like mopping the floor, cleaning the house.

7) Be less stressed- I am unable to go to the toilet when I am stressed out. This is as true as it gets! Every morning, I have to sit calmly down and just wait until nature calls....

8) Skincare regime- Maintain a good skincare regime by incorporating hydration into your skin.

A couple of post ago, I mentioned that my skin was looking a little dull and feeling a little drier than usual. I wasn't sure if the cause is due to the seasonal changes or not. What I know is I have to amp up the hydration level of my skin before it gets worse. I started to bring back my lotion mask into my night routine and use my Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Lotion as my toner in the day. Just tweaking my regime by using products containing humectants worked.

Why Hydration is Important?

The skin can be damaged easily by a variety of things. The sun, stress, hormones, and diet can all damage the skin, especially over a period of time. Since damaged skin tends to look older, hydration alone can make skin look much younger. Therefore, hydration is important to those who desire healthy skin which ultimately leads to better looking skin. Hydration is beneficial to:

Dry Skin- Proper hydrating will cause dryness to go away and makes dry patches, flakes or redness to disappear.

Aging Skin-Dry skin in need of hydration often makes people look older than they really are. Dry skin makes skin to damage easily, which further ages the skin. When cells move outward and age, skin's protective barrier becomes compromised, making water retention difficult. Humectants

Hyaluronic acid is a good humectant as it prevents skin's moisture from evaporating. This substance found in skin cells traps in moisture for smooth, firm, plump looking skin and reduces the look of wrinkles.

Occlusives

They work by slowing the evaporation of the water from the surface of the skin. They form a thick barrier film over skin's outer layer to prevent moisture from evaporating. Occlusives works best when they are applied on damp skin. However, occlusives ingredients can be greasy or sticky and they can clog pores, contributing to acne. So this is for consideration only for dry skin people with rare break outs. Alternately, you may use these ingredients for body only.

Examples: Vegetable oils, like avocado or olive oil.

Emollients

It is seldom that I would buy L'occitane's stuffs at their normal retail price. Personally, I feel that the pricing is a bit on the high side for something as simple as a body lotion. However, during one of their recent sale, I managed to grab some discounted stuffs and this is one of them. A sniff of this won me over!

I have always been a fan of their Verbena range but this scent is at a different dimension. It is both refreshing and just makes you feel 'oh so good'.

Product Description

Enriched with organic Verbena extract from Corsica and refreshing agents, this moisturizing body lotion has a melting texture that envelopes the body with a fresh and aromatic bouquet of scents. Thanks to its unique jelly-like texture, skin is left supple and delicately perfumed with the aromatic and fresh Verbena fragrance notes. Ideal for an invigorating break!

My Thoughts

Let's start with what I like. The first thing that I liked about this body gel is the scent. Yes, it had me at the first sniff! It is so wonderfully refreshing and aromatic without being overpowering sweet. It is just nice and the scent is lasting too...Secondly, I like the consistency of the body gel as it absorbs easily to your skin and does not leave the sticky icky feeling. It pretty much hydrates the skin pretty well too.

Now, moving on to what I dislike. It is a Limited Edition product and from what I heard, they have already discontinue this gel. Boo! I would rather they keep this and discontinue the citrus verbena range instead. Secondly, the price! I think I would not purchase this if it is not at a discounted price. MYR 111 is a pretty steep price to pay for a body gel.

Overall

It is a pretty decent body gel and I find that this is good to use on those days that are hot and humid. It does leave a slight cooling sensation upon application and I love the lasting scent of this body gel. I also like that this is not heavy and it keeps your skin hydrated throughout the day. I am giving this a rating of 4 out of 5.

Many months back, I had a great experience trying out a sample of the Moisture Serum from MVO. It left such an impression on me that I knew I had to purchase the bottle in full in my next haul.

I have been faithfully using this serum every night for the past 3 months and I think it is due time to give a full review on this.

My Thoughts

With a longer period for me to fully experience this serum, I began to see a new light to this product. Other than having this serum that smells great like fresh leaves, this serum is WOW! I really, really adore this serum so much that I like this more than the Anti Aging Oil.

What I really like about this serum is that it always leaves my skin soft and smooth to touch. Both my cheeks are seriously like mini baby's bottom! It also never fails to hydrate my skin, leaving it plump and bouncy the day after. This serum is just perfect for me because it does not break out on me. It somehow balances my skin well and I have been experiencing good skin condition since I incorporated this serum into my regime. Not only that, it always makes me look fresh with a glow every morning even at times when I have some late nights. Sound like a power serum, isn't it?

This serum reminds me very much of Estee Lauder's Hydrationist...except that this Moisture Serum is way much better because the hydration last longer. Sometimes, I may just skip this serum for 2 days and just stick with the Anti Aging Oil. Even for the 2 days, the hydration level of my skin remained.

I personally think this is an underrated product and it is a hidden gem amongst the other serums in the MVO range. This is a great serum to have for anyone who is experiencing dry or dehydrated skin. I think this is great too for those who wish to boost back some hydration level to their skin. This serum clearly deserves a 5 out of 5 rating.

How many of us would be in awe as we flip through magazines pictures of women with flawless and porceline skin? Honestly, I do..even though I know that the pictures are airbrushed.

Sensitive Skin

Early this week, I shared about identifying your skin type. In this post, I am going to share further about some of my readings on dealing with sensitive skin.

Many people say they have sensitive skin because:

Certain skin care products, or household products that contact their skin, cause stinging, burning, redness, and/or tightness.
Although they have no visible effects after contact with a product, it always makes their skin feel uncomfortable.

Dermatologists, doctors specializing in skin, consider the diagnosis of sensitive skin when they:

See skin reactions such as pustules, skin bumps, and/or skin erosion.
Observe excessively dry skin, which doesn’t adequately protect nerve endings on the skin and may lead to skin reactions from cosmetics or skin care products.
Notice a tendency to blushing and skin flushing, which may also be signs of sensitive skin.

What causes sensitive skin reactions?

Underlying skin disorders or allergic skin reactions related to immune system dysfunction such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), urticaria (hives), rosacea, or allergic contact dermatitis.

Overly dry or injured skin that can no longer protect nerve endings, leading to skin reactions.

Excessive exposure to skin-damaging environmental factors such as sun and wind, or excessive heat or cold.

Less well defined are genetic factors and age, gender, and race differences in skin sensitivity. For example, a type of eczema called nummular dermatitis is most commonly found in men over age 60

Caring for sensitive skin, especially for face

Cleansing. Dermatologists say that people’s sensitive skin responds differently to different cleansing methods. But most agree that “deodorant” soap or highly fragranced soap contains strong detergents and should not be used on the face. Soap-free cleansers such as mild cleansing bars and sensitive-skin bars, along with most liquid facial cleansers, have a lower pH than soaps. They have less potential for facial skin irritation, along with cleansing creams and disposable facial washcloths.

Moisturizing. These products help your skin retain moisture so it resists drying and abrasion.

What to look for in skin care products?

Specific guidelines are lacking, but more “skin-friendly” products contain:

Only a few ingredients
Little or no fragrance
Methylparaben or butylparaben as preservatives

What to avoid?

If you have sensitive skin, avoid products containing:

Antibacterial or deodorant ingredients
Alcohol
Retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids

Identifying Your Skin Type

I've always thought that my skin is normal to combination all these while. In fact, I thought that this will always be my permanent skin type! In fact, I was wrong. Skin type do change season to season and as you age.

My skin type currently is combination and sensitive skin. I had many beauty advisors giving me 'multiple' diagnosis all the years. One would tell me that I have combination skin, the other will then say that I have dehydrated skin. One would say that I have normal skin. Usually it's between these three. But surprisingly, to date, only one told me that I have sensitive skin as well. ( and she is right ).

How do know that I have sensitive skin? I have the tendency to blushing to skin flushing when exposed to temperature change and I do experience stinging or burning reactions when using certain skin products. To some severity, I do develop some tiny skin bumps if the reaction is bad. Overly dry skin is also one of the symptoms of one having sensitive skin. We often misinterpret the dry skin condition and concludes that we have dehydrated skin type as a whole but not knowing that it is part of the signs of having sensitive skin.

I think many of us are still uncertain on what type of skin type that we have. We are so often influenced by what other tells us. Honestly, the best person to know your skin type is only YOU. I think no one can understand our skin better except ourselves.

Determining which skin type your skin matches is an important step in proper and healthy skin care. For example, you do not want to pursue a skin care regiment or use skin care products for oily skin if you have dry skin. In addition, if you have sensitive skin, then you need to pay closer attention to the type of products being used on your skin to avoid possible allergic skin reactions.

NORMAL SKIN

The characteristics of an individual with a normal skin type are:

skin texture is even, soft, smooth, and plump
the skin is reasonably firm to the touch
the skin has good elasticity
no red or dark patches on the skin and the skin color is fairly even
pores of the skin are small to medium in size
blemishes are uncommon
in general the skin neither feels too oily or too dry
most quality skin care products do not irritate the skin
overall the skin looks vibrant and healthy

OILY SKIN

The first type of problem skin is oily skin. An individual with oily skin may have the following skin features:

shiny or slippery skin appearance, especially on the forehead, nose, and chin (the T-zone)
skin is course, overly firm, and thicker, beyond that of normal skin
pores are large and visible
pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and other acne blemishes are present or frequently appear
after washing, skin gets an oily build-up after only a couple of hours
oily film on face is present after sleeping

My Thoughts...

It is my first time ever consuming manuka honey so I really can't compare much. The consistency and colour is very, very different from the ordinary store bought honey. The store bought ones are yellow, semi thick and semi clear. For manuka honey, the consistency is thick, brown in colour and it is very naturally sweet.

I usually consume the manuka honey 'neat' in the mornings. As recommended by them, we are take 1-2 teaspoonfuls of undiluted manuka honey, 3-4 times a day, up to 30 minutes before each meal and before going to bed. It is advisable not to eat or drink anything within the 30 minutes too. For me, I adhere to the 30 minutes waiting period but so far, I have yet to take it 3- 4 times a day. :P

To date, my digestive system seem to be working alright but I know I need to take manuka honey for a longer period of time to have my system back to the regular mode. So far, as true to what it claims, it helped me with my sore throat and ward off colds as soon as I first felt it.

I have yet to try this as a mask because personally, I would rather take it internally than spreading the precious honey on my skin. Washing it off after 10-15 minutes seems a little wasteful for me. :P

So far, I am rather pleased with this product and it helps to know that their production practices and the honey are of high standards. Will definitely repurchase this again once I am done.

Girls, this is an impromptu post which I just have to share this with you. As all of know, the holiday season is drawing near and all major brands are pushing out their exclusive festive sets. Actually, this is the best time to shop for these sets because they are value for money.

Yesterday, I was set to to buy the brush set from MAC, which unfortunately, was out of stock in 1 Utama. I was put on a waiting list and decided to drop by Laura Mercier cos I need to pick up a blusher from there. Lo and behold! Their Holiday 2011 was on display and they looked absolutely gorgeous!!! Seriously, I am in awe till now.

My eyes were drawn to this particular set- Laura Mercier Luxe Colour Porfolio. The contents of this kit is:

6 very wearable powder eyeshadows, three cake liners, two powder blushes and three travel-size eye brushes. I love everything about it. From the packaging and all the way to the brushes!

The packaging is gorgeous. I think this year, Laura Mercier's Holiday Sets outshines the rest. It is a better offering than MAC and Bobbi Brown. I love the very sleek magnetic clasp ( shown below )

Now, lets see the colours....drumroll....

Isn't it just lovely? The colours are all very wearable, suitable for both night and day. What I read from other reviews is that all the colours are very pigmented. I had been wanting to buy myself an eyeliner but hesitant all these while because I couldn't find one that is long lasting and one that doesn't give me raccoon eyes at the end of the day. After doing some research on the web, I find out that LM eyeliners are the best. It is versatile to act as a normal eyeliner and excellent especially for doing tight lining. If you have very sensitive eyes, this is for you.

I've tried both the blushers at the counter before purchasing and these colours are just lovely on me. It gives me a very natural blush on the cheeks. Again, the colours are very pigmented. Armed with a soft hand, a little goes a long way.

Now, on to the brushes. The included travel size brushes are: Mini Ponytail Brush ( blending eyeshadow brush, similar to MAC 217 ), Mini Crease Brush ( for eye crease work or precise application ) and Mini Flat Eye Liner Brush. I must say, I prefer these brushes than MAC's because it is softer, dense and gentle to skin. ( I appreciate it much more after doing some online research! )

I must say that this palette is pretty amazing and value for money too...and that is why I had to post this as quickly as possible, just to share it with all of you to grab this before it fly off the shelves! Even at RM 375, this is a good deal palette. The 14 pieces of item work out to just RM 26 each. The blusher itself is selling at RM 95 each! So, you do the math.

Do bear in mind that the blushes and eyeshadows are the actual size pan. For the eyeliner, what I understand is it is slightly smaller than the normal one.

They have a few ranges and now, I am considering if I should get their brush set as well.:D

Seasonal Skin Changes

How many of us believe that we would still experience the seasonal changes ( Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter ) even though we live in a tropical country like Malaysia?

I don't know how far this is true but I was rather intrigued by this when someone pointed out this to me a few years ago. I didn't really think about that until recently, I see a few changes on my skin. At this time, it is a period of transition from autumn to winter, where the air tends to be drier. I noticed that my skin, overall, feels much drier and rather dull than in the month of May-July. Funny isn't it?

I am not sure if the cause is due to the seasonal changes or not. All I know is that I need to concentrate on hydration at this period. My skin regime is basically the same as updated in the month of October except that I incorporate my lotion mask back to my skin care regime. And boy, it does help! ( For those who have yet to know this wonderful and easy to do mask, click HERE to read more about it )

I've been doing some reading from web and below are some tips for caring for your skin during seasonal changes.

Just like clothes, different seasons call for different needs. If you are prone to seasonal allergies/sensitivity, you may want to update your skin's wardrobe when the climate becomes drier. Most beauty-savvy women will have 2 sets of skin care: one for spring/summer, and another for autumn/winter. For Spring/Summer, choose a refreshing line of products since the humidity in the air is higher; and for Autumn/Winter, choose a more moisturizing line to keep skin hydrated. No matter what you choose, make sure that the product line you choose is right for your age and skin type!

Many people experience seasonal sensitivity/allergy with their skin when seasons change. Seasonal sensitivity can be frustrating if you don't know the cause of your skin problems; it can create additional stress that may aggravate the existing condition. What can an affected person do?

First of all, try to determine whether you have seasonal sensitivity:

Do you have the following symptoms?

1. Rough skin
2. Dull skin tone
3. Skin turns slightly red compared to usual
4. Rash or itchiness
5. Eczema
6. Recurring dryness and flakiness despite using moisturizers
7. Oiliness and breakouts
8. Deep cleansing facial masks and scrubs did not improve condition but made it worse.

The Reasons

If you have 3 or more of the above symptoms, your skin may be prone to seasonal allergies that occur typically around autumn, when humidity in the air decreases. The air is drier than in the summer, and can cause irritations for sensitive skin. The bad news is, sensitivity tends to reoccur with season changes. The good news is, you can also do something about it!

Cleansing

Skin tends to become drier in autumn. As in all seasons, choose a mild cleanser that will thoroughly remove makeup (double cleansing) but will not strip away skin’s essential moisture. And as a rule, don't overdo it! Cleansing twice a day is generally enough.

Toning

For toners, choose a product that is non-drying, hydrating and can strengthen the moisture barrier of your skin.

Moisturizing

As the air gets dry, the level of moisture your skin is exposed to will decrease. Dehydration can cause your sebum glands to secrete excessive oil, which can clog pores and lead to acne. Choosing a hydrosol-based toner and moisturizer that will keep skin hydrated for a long time is essential in maintaining healthy looking, blemish-free skin. For moisturizers, pick a product that is hydrosol-based and non-greasy to balance against excessive sebum secretion, replenishing your skin with moisture. If you have very dry or dehydrated skin, using a moisturizing mask 2 to 3 times a day can also fortify the moisture barrier of your skin. Essence sheet masks are also an ideal way of infusing your skin with moisture as they are easily absorbed and penetrate deeper into your skin's layers.

Keep irritants at bay

Desperate people do desperate things. At the first sign of acne, many people will resort to using the harshest cleansers and masks to help unclog pores, unaware of the cause of the breakout in the first place. Products that are acidic can cause irritations to skin that is prone to seasonal allergies and sensitivity. Many deep cleansing/pore refining scrubs, clay masks, and treatment products contain harsh alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids which can aggravate the condition, making your skin worse than before. If your skin is prone to seasonal sensitivity and allergies, switch to a product line that is mild and non-irritating when seasons change to lower your sensitivity. Stay away from products containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids until your condition improves and your skin returns to normal.

Although hot water does not contain irritants, it can become an irritant when used on sensitive skin. Avoid hot baths and using hot water to wash your face since hot water can dilate your pores and irritate your skin. Also, cleanse any hair products thoroughly and avoid leaving residue on your face when showering.

The Solutions

Seasonal changes can cause serious damage to your skin. Follow these helpful hints to keep your skin healthy and beautiful all winter long, and be sure to schedule regular appointments with your skin care specialist.

• Proper moisture balance—As the air gets colder and drier, your skin begins to lose moisture. This can cause flaking, chaffing, peeling and redness. Therefore, it is very important to keep skin moisturized all winter long, regardless of your skin type. Give your skin a boost with a deep-penetrating nourishing mask to help maintain your skin’s hydration. Misting several times a day, just one or two spritzes, with a hydrosol will deeply hydrate tissues. A whole house humidifier, or even a room one, will add needed moisture back into the dry winter air.

• Avoiding breakouts—Many skin types react to the cold weather by over-producing oil in an effort to compensate for moisture loss. This overproduction can lead to an increase in acne as pores clog with sebum. This is why it is vital to listen to your skin care specialist, and follow the skin care routine she prescribes. Keep in mind that without proper exfoliation, dead skin cells and sebum will clog pores, increasing acne flare ups, redness and the possibility of infection.

• Perk up dull skin—The colder weather can leave your skin looking dull and worn. Proper cleansing, toning, exfoliation and treatment will help rejuvenate tired looking skin. Nourish your skin with nutrient-rich moisturizers for a soft, dewy look.

• Wear an SPF—Although it may not seem necessary to wear an SPF during the winter months, it is necessary. Harmful UV rays penetrate your skin year-round, and protection is the key to maintaining healthy skin and helping to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and even cancer. Use an SPF of 15 or higher.

Do you clean your hairbrush often?

How many of us clean our hairbrushes often? If some do, do you clean them weekly? Yearly? Or once every 2 years?

Unfortunately, I am not brought up with the habit of cleaning my brush often. In 'those' days, I would usually resort to purchase a new one once my brush is a little wear off. Not very environmentally friendly, isn't it? And not wise either, I may add.

I have with me my old faithful Vidal Sasson brush, which I have been using for 10 years and has travelled with me wherever I go. Surprisingly, it is still in very, very good condition...despite that I haven't clean it since I bought it. I do, occasionally clear any hair remnants from my brush and rinse it off with water, but that's about it.*Sheepish smile* I am ashamed to have committed a serious offence, in the unhygienic category.

However, all is not lost...I cleaned it thoroughly a couple of weeks ago and I am glad that I did that. The amount of dirt that I cleaned off was unspeakable of course. Accumulated dust and hair remnants. I feel much much better now using a clean hair brush to I brush my hair. I constantly would remind myself to be more disciplined to wash my hair brush every month.

Washing it is easy peesy. Just get a new toothbrush as shown below:

Apply some shampoo on the tips of the toothbrush and brush away, concentrating especially at the base of the hair brush.

Finally, rinse the hairbrush thoroughly and let it air dry.

I have learnt that sometimes, we tend to forget to do some simple housekeeping on our everyday items. Just like our skin that gets special attention, our everyday items must be showered with some TLC too.

I purchased this when I ran out of my favourite Baby Bees Body Wash and the promoter also promises that all my 'daki-daki' ( accumulated dead skin ) will be washed off by this. Sounds very exaggerated, isn't it? Now let's put this to a test and see if it works, just like the promoter said, shall we?

My Experience

I absolutely love body washes that smells nice and this one does live up to my standards. It has a nice and uplifting citrus-y smell. Perfect to be used in the morning! The body wash is clear and the consistency is the same as Baby Bees. That being said, this one does not foam as much.

I also like that it does not leave your skin feeling dry or make your skin squeaky clean. Unlike Baby Bees, this wash does not leave a lasting scent, so a bit of a disappointment there. Well, you might ask, did it removed all the 'daki-daki'? No, it did not. You will need an aid of a loofah should you need extra exfoliation. So, all said by the promoter is not true.

Overall

Honestly, I don't have much to say about this wash because it didn't really wow me. Yes, the smell is nice, uplifting and refreshing and..yes, it does not leave my skin feeling dry. To me, it's just a fairly decent body wash. The Baby Bee wash made more of an impression to me than this one, honestly. I would just give this a normal rating of 3 out of 5.

No oil soluble Vitamin C forms that are less effective or liquids that can cause the Vitamin C to oxidize.

As previously said, I had wanted to try mixing my own Vit C serum but because L-Ascorbic Acid is unstable and oxidises quickly, I certainly wouldn't like to make any boo boo and ruin the Vit C serum all together. I am pretty happy that MVO provided a good alternative to Vit C application and, it contain other great ingredients too!

My Experience

I use this at night, at the last step after I apply my toner, Moisture Serum and anti-aging oil. The application is pretty simple, I mix the powder from the whole capsule with1 pump of my Skin Lightening Serum.

I must say that the new formula is much finer and dissolve easily with the serum. That said however, it still leave some tiny, tiny bits of reside and with this, I can't say that I can slide the serum easily on my face like any other serums. What I can do is rub it between my palms and gently tap it on my face for about 30 seconds until it absorbs. I have sensitive skin and at times, I do feel some tingling sensation once applied. I am not sure about others but for me, some of the powders cannot be fully absorbed and I still feel some residue on my face. What I did is follow up a tiny bit of moisturizer to seal it all in.

The next morning, I can tell you that your skin will feel amazing! My skin is plump up, smooth to touch and with prolong use, I see great changes on my skin tone, my pigmentations and acne scars. I do feel that my skin is much firmer too. Double yay!

As mentioned in my October skincare regime, I only use this Vit C supplement 3 times a week after exfoliation and my yoghurt mask. Do bear in mind that you need to wear sunscreen daily should you use Vit C as a treatment.

Overall

I really, really like that this supplement greatly improves my skin tone, pigmentation and old acne scars. Personally, I think using Vit C is top of the class in dealing with pigmentation problems. Not only that, it also stimulates collagen production that firms up your skin ( simply put it, you will have the 'tiong tiong' effect ).
With this, I am giving this product a rating of 4 out of 5. The only downside is that though it is finer than the previous formula, it still leave behind a powdery residue. Because it stays on your skin, you need to be careful when with your sleeping position as some will stain your pillowcases or sheets!

Tips: Try to finish up the supplements in 3 months time as Vit C is unstable and oxidises quickly when exposed to air, light or liquid. If oxidized, Vitamin C becomes incapable of delivering any benefits and may even be potentially harmful, acting as an oxidant increasing the formation of free radicals.

Those who read my blog regularly knows that I have this love affair with yoghurt mask. I have been consistantly using this as my mask and it has become a staple mask for me. My skin has reaped great benefits from it, both in moisturization and evening out my skin tone too.

On the other hand, I love the benefits of rice powder as well. I have read some site that recommended adding rice powder to yoghurt as it claims to reduce wrinkles, blemishes and helps in brightening. So I have decided to amped up my yoghurt mask with my bedak sejuk pastilles.

Smooth this paste over your face and leave it on for about ten minutes, then wash it off with warm water.
Yes, it is as simple as that and your face does feels soft and much smoother, than using yoghurt alone!

Because my skin is now back to normal, I do have slightly oily area at my T zone. This combo is a great once a week purifying mask for me as it helps to balance up my skin and helps in oil control.
I've been using this mask for 2 months now and I do have to say it helps in hydrating my skin and gives me brighter complexion each time. For wrinkles, well...it's too soon to tell because I don't have any major issues with it to begin with.

One thing I love to use yoghurt as a mask because it is so verstile and inexpensive! You can add rolled oats, which helps to minimize your pores or manuka honey for extra moisturization. It is certainly one of the many great wonders that God created for us all to enjoy.

Tips: You may replace the bedak sejuk with rice powder ( preferably organic/ unbleached ) for this mask.

I post this question because of late, I realised that I've been spending quite a significant amount on money ever since I started blogging and paying more attention to beauty products. I seldom go on an impulsive buying spree but still....it has taken a slight toll on my credit card. Sigh! I then start to re-examine and try to see which part that I spend the most on.

Number 3

Body

In this category, I spend it mostly on body washes. I usually have 2 shower gels in my bathroom: normal priced ones ( Eucerin, Burt Bees or Esmeria ) and a 'luxe' one to pamper myself, mainly from L'occitane. I just love smelling nice and wonderful before going to sleep. Secondly, I spend on body oils, lotions, deodorants and scrubs. For body oils, I usually like to do my own because it's more economical and result oriented in a long run.

Do note that I usually buy them all when they are at discounted and seldom ( or never ) buy them at full price.

Hair

I recently had my hair permed and treated so the big chunk of money goes there. I noticed that when you do something new to your hair, you will usually spend more on better shampoos or hair treatments.

Every woman likes to pamper themselves once in a while. Ironically, my simple form of pampering is giving myself a good body scrub. Since I am using body oils at the moment, I was thinking "Why not I get myself a good body scrub to slough off all the dead skin so that my skin would look FA-BU-LOUS!"

Off I go for some body scrub hunting and my, my....body scrubs don't come in cheap these days. So I resort to step into The Body Shop ( by the way, it's been AGES since I step into this shop ). The last item I ever bought from The Body Shop was those cute little perfume bottles, which since has been a discontinued item. Yes...you can imagine, it's been more than 10 years.

To cut the long story short, among their range of body scrubs, this one appeals to me the most, mainly because of the scent. This scent is identical to the body balm, which was given to me by a friend, and used during my uni days.

Product Description

A luxuriously creamy cleansing exfoliator with skin softening ximenia oil and Community Trade cocoa butter with an evocative, floral fragrance to leave skin feeling superbly smoothed, softened, revitalised and radiant.

My Experience

The product comes in a nice canister-like packaging, which I must say, the metal clutch is a nuisance to open. It is those 'nice to look at but a pain to use' type. The scrub is thick and skewed towards a balm texture. Have I mentioned that it smells delicious and luxurious at the same time? It really is!

To avoid contamination, I bought a nice wooden spoon from Daiso to scoop up the scrub. ( It just gives you the extra pampering, no? ) Two scoops is just enough for my whole body. What I did was damp my skin first and slowly apply the scrub to my skin in circular movements. The scrub do feel a little harsh at first but once the salt dissolves, it seems better.

However, I find difficulty in disseminating the balm as it can get slippery at times if your skin is more than damp. If your skin is too dry, you will have the same problem too. So, you have to 'work in a way' until the scrub is workable. Not so friendly, isn't it?

Once you rinse it off, it does gives you the smooth to touch and silky skin. Skin does feel moisturised and in a way, makes you feel...lighter. Your skin will also feels like a dream once you follow up with body oil.

Overall

I can't wow about this product, even though it have a good scent and gives you the smooth and silky skin. The downpoint of this product, for me, is the packaging and the not-so-friendly scrub. And it is not entirely cheap too. Yeah, this is one of my impulsive buys and not doing thorough research on the net before buying into this.

Spa Wisdom Ximenia & Salt Scrub..I am sorry....after using you for 2 months now, I have to give you a 2 out of 5 rating. Ouch!

My Current Skincare Regime-October

I thought today might be a good time now to share and update all readers on my current skin condition. My last update was in the month of June and since then, I have made some changes because my skin is slowly going back to normal.

At this time of writing, I am pleased to share that my skin is feeling and looking good. The noticable radiance and glow is back too. My skin is much more balanced, dry areas are back to normal and I have less hormonal breakouts. I have seen remarkable changes especially on my skin's moisture level, lightening and firming. My pores are much smaller and refined too.

The products which I am using currently, is more or less the same as I did since the month of June. I've tweaked some on my day routines and have introduced the yoghurt mask, serum and topical Vit C from Marie Veronique Organics to my current regime. Here are my routines:

My Thoughts....

With this new and improved routine, I have been experiencing excellent skin condition and no breakouts. ( Do bear in mind that I also go for my facials at my regular salon once a month.)

Before I started an overhaul of my skincare products, my skin was dull. Pores were visible, pigmentation spots are getting more and my skin is dehydrated. My 'then' products weren't helping me at all. To have a clearer picture, here is the before and after shots:

Learning from mistakes....

Since I've started to incorporate some new products in the month of April, I do see improvements in 2 months...but not to the satisfactory mark I've hoped. I had my trials and errors and learned to make a few adjustments to see how it works. I have also changed some habits and added some ( read here ) along the way.

Gets better with prolonged use...

Through my experience, I do see that natural products take a longer period of time for us to see and feel the results. I have used brands which are not 100% natural related before and I do see almost instantaneous results to my skin. My skin feels and look good the day after but after a few days, the effects will deplete. In comparison when using natural based products, the effects may be slower than commercial ones but, the results gets better with continuous use and importantly, it stays.

Lastly.....

I wouldn't say that only certain products helped me..I would say ALL and it also take a good amount of discipline and patience have my skin the way it is now.

Do you believe in regular facials?

I used to be an unbeliever in regular facials but after attending one regularly for almost 5 years, I have to say a big yes to this! I personally find it important because it helps to improve and maintain my skin condition. My skin would have been worse if I hadn't been attending one regularly. However, during my 5 years of having regular facials at beauty salons, I wouldn't say all is well. Frankly, I have my moments of:

Beauticians telling me ( even to date ) that my blackheads are not improving and I need to constantly do my regular mask at home ( which I faithfully do 3 times a week ). I have to hear that again and again, and it can get pretty annoying.
Regular heartaches. When I think I have found the 'right' therapist for me, no sooner than that, they would tell me that they are leaving for greener pastures.
Putting up with rough and inexperienced therapist. I sometimes feel that they have an on-going 'who is the fastest' record breaking time competition among them.
Breakouts or allergy because they have used an unsuitable product on me...and worst still, not compenstated at all!

and more often than not.....

Being constantly pressured to buy their products or sign up for packages.
Spending more than I should. Sometimes, I caved in into buying deals, which do not deem necessary for me. My back account also suffers....

Now, it seems like I am contradicting myself here do I? However..

For me, I find having regular facials is neccessary because:

They can do a better job at cleaning your face than doing it on my own at home. They have the experience and not to mention, certain machines like facial steamers to help to remove the gunk from our face.
They do a better job at extractions that do not leave a scar on your face because they know which acne can be or cannot be extracted. Plus, some salons do have antiseptic equipments or lotions to help kill off unwanted bacterias to promote faster healing.
They have equipments to help better absorptions for serums to penetrate deeply to your skin. This gives a longer 'mileage' of that treatment for your skin.
Some do wonderful facial massages that is almost impossible to have the same results if I were to do it on my own.
It helped me to improve and maintain my skin condition. My hormonal breakouts would have been worse or there will be more scarring on my face.
It helps you to relax. I like facials that offers addtional free service of neck massages! It helps greatly to loosen up all the knots, I'll say.
It aids in better absorption for my serums or products used at home.

Lesson learned along the way....

I used to go for packages or treatments that are average or above average because at that time, my skin condition needed that. However, at the same time, it has taken a toll on my bank account, honestly. Seeing that my skin is at better condition now, I switch and opted for lower treatments, just for maintainence sake and at a much lower and affordable price.

Whether facials are a yay or nay to some of us, it all depends on one's preferences and honestly, facials do not come cheap. In fact, it is a form of luxury, I suppose..

Review: Sukin Purifying Facial Masque

This was an unexpected buy because this comes in free when I bought the Sukin Night Cream for my sister. ( By the way, my sis suffers from acute ezema and apparently, only this night cream can restore her severely dehydrated skin without causing any allergies to her face ) Pretty interesting, isn't it?

I have heard several good reviews of Sukin for quite a while now but not sure why I have yet to try their products. When I got hold of this masque, I am unsure if I should try this since I am pretty happy with my yoghurt mask now and I know, I can't risk having any breakouts again seeing my previous experience HERE.

Without shelving this product and wasting it, the best person to use this will be my: husband. Actually, I was pretty surprised that he offered to use this product, with conditions that I do the mask for him! Tsk! My poor husband has been using up 'unloved' items that deemed unsuitable for me so I think this is a fair trade.

Now, let's see if this product works for him shall we....

His Experience

My husband's skin type is oily, with large pores and post acne scars. His only skincare routine is just washing his face at night with a cleanser. Upon occasional pestering, he would 'allow' me to use toner and oil for his face. A simple man, with simple routines.

This is my husband's first masque experience for him and to ensure his comfort, I would try to explain to him how masque would feel like and if any way he feels uncomfortable, he would have to let me know.

This masque is pretty unsual. The Koalin clay is like 'terracotta' in colour, strong brownish-red and the masque is thick and paste-like. Despite the colour, the scent is refreshing and comforting. My husband commented that he like the smell. Score #1.

I use a brush to apply on his face and it glides easily. I applied a rather semi-thick coat as I find that his face absorbs the masque rather rapidly. It is stated to leave the masque on for 15 minutes to allow deep penetration to skin. However, the masque begin to dry up after 10 minutes but my husband says that his face is still comfortable, no tugging feeling.

When we rinse it off, he commented that the masque do leave a oily film on his face. I believe it is normal because of the high content of rosehip and other oils in the masque. I then followed up by wiping his face using a warm washcloth. He mentioned that his skin feels very comfortable, soft and smooth too. Score #2. I end the whole regime with toner and rosehip oil for him.

He continued using this masque twice a week for 2 months and he is asking for more now! Score #3 He told me he sees improvements on his face and he noticed that his pores are not so obvious and is less prone to breakouts. His face do looked more even toned, refreshed and surprisingly, not as oily as before. He even recommended me to try this masque on his dad!

Overall

My husband is pretty pleased with this masque and happy to see improvements on his skin. When at times when I was too busy to do the mask for him, he would remind me otherwise to do for him. ( Now, that is saying something right? ) I won't be giving any ratings at this moment because the product is used by my husband anyway. I will be giving ratings only when I try this masque myself...maybe sometime soon.:D

My Blemish Treatment ( Part 3 ): Bedak Sejuk ( Cooling Rice Powder )

Homemade Bedak Sejuk ( Cooling Rice Powder )

Concluding 'my blemish treatment' trilogy will be this tradional beauty product called Bedak Sejuk ( Cooling Rice Powder ). For me, I would fondly call it 'Sui Fan' ( literally translated to powder water ) because I remember when I was young, my mom would apply them all over my face.

Then, I wasn't sure how this product will do any good to my face because I looked ridiculously ghostly when applied at night. Now, being older and wiser *cough*, I really have to thank my mom for this because I think, it gradually helped me as I don't have severe acne problems when puberty hits. I am very blessed with good skin condition ( up until now ) and my friends would always praise me for my fair and glowing skin.

The Main Ingredient and How It Is Made

I bought mine, which is homemade using the traditional method. High quality of rice grains is first cleaned and soaked for 3 months or until dissolved. ( Some even keep it for a year ) The filtered rice paste is then poured into a clean container and filled again with clean water. The water must be changed every 2-3 weeks to get rid of the unpleasant smell.

To make it into the pastilles, they would then fill some rice paste into a cone ( made of pandan leaves or mango leaves ) From the cone, they will drop the tiny droplets unto a large clean surface and place under the sun to dry ( with pandan leaves ) for 3 days or more. During the packing process, they would place the dried pandan leaves or jasmine flowers together to get rid of the bad smell. During the olden days, they would usually present this as a gift to relatives or passed on to their grandchildren.

Since mine is homemade, I think they omit the fragrance during the fermentation process. In modern times, usually the process takes only 2 weeks and they may use fragrance to rid the smell. Some pastilles may be white in colour ( means they are using normal bleached rice ) vs organic ones.

Benefits of Rice Powder

As many of us know, rice powder have a wealth of benefits.

It's been used in the Asian culture for hundreds of years. In Geisha's culture, rice powder is used to whiten their complexions.
Boost UV protection as rice contains a high concentration of para aminobenzoic acid.
Contains anti-inflammatory properties that soothes sunburns, reduce acne and also promotes the skin's repair. ( Many use rice powder as a natural alternative to soothe baby rashes )
Natural skin lightener and smooths skin.
Contains ceramide which increases collegen production to make skin more supple and free from wrinkles.
Gentle exfoliater, removes dead skin and dissolves pure clogging impurities.
Eliminates pimples or whiteheads.

My Experience

I was too excited to try this that I ended up testing it on the night itself.:P Coincidentally that night, I had two breakouts near my nose bridge and felt that the timing was perfect to use the bedak sejuk as a spot treatment since the pimples are still 'fresh'.

I use just two pastilles and add a little bit of water to make it into a paste. However, I realised that I added too much water to it that made it pretty watery. The trick to getting slightly thicker paste is adding water little by little to reach the desired consistency. If it's overly watery, just add more pastilles.

The colour is 'wheatish' brown and it does have a strong fermented smell to it. I apply them overnight and the next day, I realised that this product helps to slowdown the development of the pimple. The pimple did subsided and not as painful as the day before. No kidding! I was actually very surprised by the speedy effects it gave.

To ensure that the pimple is fully subsided, I continued the same treatment for the next four days. I can happily testify that: It Worked. It subsided fully and the spot also lightens rather quickly. I am 'wowed' by the results honestly. I have used a few acne treatment products before but never one that works as good as this. The previous ones will more often than not, leave a distinctly dark spot that takes a rather long time to lighten.

I am glad to have found a product from the past that works pretty well for me as a natural alternative to spot treatment. I am sure that it works as good too as a purifying facial mask, which I am currently experimenting now. Will update the results soon!

My Experience

To benefit the goodness of lactic acid, I use yoghurt as my facial mask in my weekly facial regime at home. I usually apply and leave it on for 10 minutes after exfoliating with my Daily Microfoliant ( containing salicylic acid ).

I've always had masks that smells great but let me tell you that with this one, the smell is not pleasant... but I endured it anyway because I know it will be beneficial for my skin :D However, after rinsing the yoghurt off, my face is plumped up, moist and smooth to touch. I love it...despite the smell!

During my allergy case ( read HERE ), this yoghurt mask did help me to calm and soothe my rashes. I believe that it helped me when paired with the Irritable Skin Balm from Moogoo.

Did it work for:

Fight against Aging and Wrinkles. Verdict: It's too soon to tell because I don't have any noticeable wrinkles to begin with :D However, because of the plumping and hydration effect that it gives to my skin, I do believe it does increase the water content of my skin, hence less wrinkles.
It is a safe and natural Skin Lightener alternative. Verdict: Overall , I do see lightening on my skin as well as my old acne scars...but it may not be the main contributing factor here as I am still using my Skin Lightening Serum with my Vitamin C powder as well. You need prolong usage of this mask to see the effects.
Help against Acne. Verdict: Yes and No actually. It did help to contain my tiny whiteheads from becoming pustules stage( inflammed, appears as a red circle with white or yellow center ) and eventually subside in the next two days. However, I don't see any improvements if my acne have reached pustules stage.

I have been incorporating this method in my regime for 2 1/2 months now and honestly, I love this yoghurt mask more than my Dermalogica Hydrating Mask. ( I have since traded my expensive store bought mask with this yoghurt mask ) I can seriously feel that it works better, in terms of hydration and balancing up my skin. I find that it works very well for my dry skin type too.

This mask has taken it's place as my staple mask in my weekly facial regime as it is all natural and it is inexpensive too! It is also a versatile mask which I can add with:

Oatmeal- Exfoliating, Reduces pore size, nourishing.

This is part of my continuation post of 'My Blemish Treatment'. What I have decided to do here is to write a separate page of the multiple uses of Lactic Acid as the benefits are too overwhelming for me to write :D

The FDA has ruled that AHAs, including lactic acid, do increase sun sensitivity. Special care should be taken when using them as part of your anti-aging skincare regime.

Wear broad spectrum suncreen SPF 20 to 30 everyday.
Use treatments at night and and never in the day.

My Blemish Treatment ( Part 1 ): Salicylic Acid Treatment and Benefits

I had a series of breakouts for the past 2 months and most of it is due to hormonal breakouts. Sigh! My breakouts are not major... probably 1 pimple per week especially on forehead and chin area. Though it is little, I usually freak out and I would desperately find remedies to calm it down. ( I think anyone would )

This is the Part 1 of my 3 'experimental treatments' ( which I will share with you this week and next too ).

Before I move on, here is a quick look on my updated skin profile:

Normal to dry, sensitive.

( Slight oiliness on the forehead but normal to dry on nose and cheeks area)

Occasional breakouts at forehead and chin area.

Congested nose
( blackheads )

Pigmentation and freckles at cheeks area.

In the month of April, my skin type was combination to dehydrated. ( Read HERE ) I am happy that after 5 months, my dehydrated skin type changed back to normal and my pigmentation problem is under control.:D

Due to my skin type, I am prone to acne scarring ( even though I do not pick on them ) and it would usually take 2 months for the scars to lighten. I am not sure if it is only me or it's normal for acne scars to take that long to clear or lighten.

In this post, my first blemish treatment that I've tried is using products containing salicylic acid. Here is a brief description on salicylic acid and other uses too.

What is it?
Salicylic acid is a kertolytic agent that aids in treating skin problems such as acne, psoriasis and dandruff. It is probably best known as a component similar to asprin, because salicylic acid is a metabolite of asprin. ( Now I know where the asprin mask hype comes from ). This treatment can be administered in a wide variety of forms such as dry, liquid and moistened products.

Blemishes or Acne
Salicylic acid works by causing the cell of epidermis to shed properly. This prevents the pores of the skin from getting clogged up and being infected by bacteria.

This helps in making bumps subside and help the skin to return to its normal production of skin cells. The most efficient way to apply salicylic acid as a topical solution is through cosmetic pads that have been soaked in the acid, which are then applied to the skin daily.

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a disease that manifest itself through irritated, scaly patches on the skin. Psoriasis can be treated with products containing salicylic acid, which helps to soften the scaly patches and encouraging shedding of the skin.

Dandruff
It is a remedy to this condition by controlling the shedding of skin cells from the scalp.

Considerations
Salicylic acid has drying effects and advisable to follow dermatologist's suggestions. It should be used externally only.

My Experience

I am thankful that I do have a product at hand that contain salicylic acid and it is my Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant.( Read review and experience HERE )

In one of my trips to my facial appointment, I was told by the beautician to leave the product on my face for a few minutes after the exfoliating process as it helps in treating blemishes and brightening my skin. During the time of my breakout, I decide to try this trick to see if it helps.

After messaging the product on my face for a few minutes, I left it on my face for 3-5 minutes. I dared not exceed more than 5 minutes because my skin is normal to dry. I followed with my mask after rinsing it off.

Results? It works on tiny whiteheads. It helps to control and subsequently subside it in the next two days. ( Bear in mind that I do the treatment only once at night, 3 times a week ) However.....it doesn't really work on whiteheads that formed to pustules stage ( inflamed, appears as a red circle with white or yellow center ) or cysts ( larger acne spots, hard bumps and pus-filled ).

I think to really try to subside the pustules or cysts, I would need to apply a little of the product on the affected area daily ( probably 4 days ) for it to subside. ( I am currently trying this method with another ingredient, which I will share with you later )

My Thoughts

I think using salicylic acid from my Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant as a treatment does help to control the tiny whiteheads and subsiding it. However, it didn't really help when it is formed to pustules or cysts. In the future, I will try applying a little of the product on the problematic spots to subside it.

To be fair, the salicylic acid in the Daily Microfoliant is minimal as it falls at number 13 over 21 in the ingredient listing. Guess the working power is not as pronounced as opposed to buying higher doses of salicylic acid contained in lotions or solutions, specifically for acne treatments.

Review: Trilogy Cream Cleanser

I have bought 3 types of cleansers since April and it seems that I can never find the right one for me. One works rather decently but had a beer scent to it. The other is good for deep cleansing but too oily for everyday use. I was hopeful for the last one but it was drying to my skin and gave me breakouts. Sigh!

I had been eying on Trilogy's Cream Cleanser for a while now because I have heard great reviews on this item. However, I was reluctant to buy then because of the price. I had never spent over RM100+ for any type of cleansers! But after going through 3 failed cleansers ( that cost less than RM100 ), I caved in and see if cleansers ( that cost more ) do does it's job.

So how was the verdict?

My Experience

The texture of the cleanser is creamy and rich, but not overly greasy. It comes in a nice brown apothecary type of glass bottle with a easy to dispense dispenser. However, one needs to be careful with this when using it in your bathroom.

For application , I found that it works better on slighty damp skin and by rubbing the cleanser gently between your palms, helps greatly to disseminate the cleanser before messaging it on your face.

Let's talk about the scent now. It smells way much better than all my previous cleansers! Though most of the ingredients are natural oils, I do detect a slightly stronger hint of frankincense, which reminds me a lot of Aesop products. Yes...at last, I have found a likeable cream cleanser scent which I can look forward to using it every night.

I have been using this cleanser for 2 months now and I am glad to say that it is not drying to my skin and it does not give me any breakouts. I like it that it cleans pretty nicely, removing my sunscreen, dirt and grimes decently. That being said however, I don't think it can remove eyeliners or mascaras well. You still need an eye makeup remover before using this.

Overall

I have grown to like this cleanser over the months and I think it is well suited to my skin. Though it does leave a slighty oily film behind, I don't see it as a problem because I always follow up by cleaning it with my gentle cleanser. After going through three cleansers dissapointments, I am glad that I have found something which I really like, despite the high price tag. With this, I am giving it a 4 out of 5.

Eucalyptus Oil and It's Uses

I bought a bottle of Eucalyptus a few months ago and my initial use of it is to treat my husband with his sinus problems. So far, I only use it once with my room diffuser to disinfect and clear my room air. With the hazy situation and the flu bug that we are experiencing now in our country, I think it's time for me to use it more often. But, are there any other uses of this oil rather than just using it with a room diffuser? Yes and here is a list of uses that I discovered:

Background

Eucalyptus oil has a fresh distinctive odor and is the most powerful antiseptic with several disinfectant properties. It also has a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, that relieves pain and soothes.

It's Uses:

Commonly use as chest rubs or decongestants. Mix 2 drops of Eucalyptus oil in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil and apply as chest rub.
Clear nasal passages ( noseblock ) or respiratory system. Put 2-3 drops of oil to a steam inhalation.
Purify a sickroom during illness or antibacterial spray for kitchen and bathroom. Add 20-30 drops of oil to 300ml water in a spray bottle and spray into the room to kill the germs.
Muscle or joint rub. Mix 3 drop of Eucalyptus oil, 2 drops of lavender oil and 2 drops of Chamomile to 2 teaspoons of carrier oil and apply to joint for soothing effect.
Insect repellent.
As an antiseptic gargle.
Removal of tar from clothes. Apply a few drops of oil to the area and wipe the tar gently using a clean cloth
Helps ease rheumatism, arthritis and muscular aches.

Even though Eucalyptus oil has many benefits, one should be careful to use it. It can cause skin irritation and should be use in moderation. Eucalyptus oil is very stimulating and it is not advisable to use it on anyone who is pregnant or suffers from high blood pressures, heart disease, hypertension and epilepsy.

DIY: My Neroli Body Oil

I discovered my love for body oils when I first bought my first bottle from Weleda. I love body oils and I find that it works so much better than body lotion. I love applying them after shower at night and the next morning, you willl wake up with smooth and supple skin.

This time, I decided to be a little adventurous by doing my own body oil when I ran out of my Weleda and Burt's Bees oils. I did a little research on DIY sites and found the right percentage by incorporating my favourite carrier and essential oils.

I like oils that are moisturising, regenerative and anti-oxidant..and that is why I choose the oils below for my body oil. Feel free to select any carrier oils of your choice or anything that is suitable for you should you like to embark on doing your own DIY body oil.

My carrier oils are:

Jojoba Gold Oil- Moisturising and anti-oxidant.
Avocado Oil- Regenerative with vitamins A, B, D and E, emollient, slows aging, repairing, stimulates collagen.
Apricot Kernel Oil- Vitamins A and E, absorbs well, soothing and moisturising.

Pomagranate Seed Oil- Rich in lipids, anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, moisturising, hydrating, nourishing and restores pH balance.
Neroli Pure Essential Oil- Restoring, rejuvenating, healing, repairing, floral and aromatic.

Tools that you need:

Measuring cup in ml- I recycled a measuring cup which I use for measuring my cough mixture.
Disposable Pipettes- Bought from Garden of Wisdom. Really handy for extracting oils from bottles.

An empty bottle- I recycled the bottle from Weleda.

Carrier and essential oils from Garden of Wisdom

Simple Steps:

1) Pour your 1st carrier oil into the measurement cup to the right amount.

2) Pour into your empty bottle.

3) Repeat the same steps as #1 for the remaining oils.

4) Use a disposable pipette to draw out your essential oil of your choice and drop a few drops into your mixed oil.

5) Give your bottle a good shake and there you have it...your own DIY body oil.

My Experience

The oils of my choice are much thicker than Weleda's but almost the same consistency as Burt's Bees. The oils absorbs rapidly into my skin and I like that it does not make my skin greasy at all.

Let me tell you about the smell...it is amazing! Neroli is a good choice as it is aromatic and it have a certain modernity scent to it. It's not the girly floral scent nor is it pungent. It is light floral with a calm scent, which makes you relax and unwind at night.

I have been using this oil for 2 months now and I really like it as it really moisturises and hydrates my skin. My skin does feel firm ( also thanks to my Weleda and Burt's Bees oil ) and I do see that my scars are also lightened.

I forsee that I will be making more of my own body oils in the future as I find that it is really easy to do. I am rest assured of it's efficacy too, knowing I can always do a 'fresh' bottle after it is finished. Did I mention that it is cheap too! A bottle of 50ml can last me for 2 months and it cost me less than RM50!

Ever wondered if I do wear makeup?

For those who are regulars to my blog do know that I always blog about products ranging from skincare, haircare, bodycare to personal hygiene and seldom..or never about makeup. And I am sure many of you would wonder "Does this woman ever wear makeup at all?"

The answer is : Yes, I do.....Only on weekends or on special occasions...:P

Reason being I am such is that I run my own business from home. Of course, wearing makeup for special occasions do include meeting up with my clients or friends, going for a nice dinner with hubby or attending weddings.

Seeing my need to wearing makeup is only applicable to special occasions would obviously result to: A very limited makeup stash.

I am always in awe with bloggers who have so many chances to try new colours or new makeup products almost all the time. And they have VAST amount of products ranging from brushes, face powders, eyeshadows, lipsticks and blushers.

Though my stash is unlike others, I am very proud of it as all the items have served me very well as all the colours are flexible and do blend in well with each other. My eyeliner never fails to give a better depth to my eyes and the Rose Shimmer Brick will always give me the dewy fresh look.

I do see and agree that makeup is important to any girl but personally, I don't see myself investing into new eyeshadows, blushers or lipstick so much just because the colour is in season. I like investing on items that are simple, flexible and suited to my face. Keep it simple is more like it...

I have heard of this brand through blogs from overseas and was rather surprised to find this selling at Sasa stores. Giovanni, which hails from USA, is relatively new to the market in Malaysia which is skewed towards using natural ingredients and most of the products do not contain SLS, SLES or Parabens. Though they are not certified organic, most of the ingredients that they use in their products are.

I love leave-in conditioners and I find them very suited to my hair. My Experience

The bottle comes with a squirt and I just need 8 squirts in total for my shoulder length hair( before blow drying ). The consistency is very runny and watery, unlike other leave in hair treatments which is thick and lotion-like. The smell is pleasantly fruity and it is not overpowering.

After blow drying my hair, my hair feels amazingly soft and nice. It feels very light too..well, too light in fact that it gives me a lot of flyaway hair. I had to tame it down with my homemade hair serum.

I have been using this for 2 months and just a few days ago, I had my hair permed. To my surprised, my hair stylist mentioned that my hair is incredibly healthy and strong ( It took more than 40 minutes for my hair to be curly than the usual 15-20 minutes ). I think I have to thank this leave in treatment and my hair serum for maintaining my hair in such good condition.

Overall

I think I have found an excellent natural based replacement for my Schwarzkopf Moisture Spray Conditioner and I am happy that it had kept my hair in good shape even before my my recent perm. ( I have to give credit for my homemade hair serum too ). I have been using this for 2 months and the bottle is still 3/4 full! It's so economical too! With this, I have to give a 5 out of 5 rating for this!

My Experience

When I first started using it 2 months back, the first thing that I was impressed was packaging. The bottle is sturdy and even though it is made in plastic, it is hard and not flimsy as to other plastic bottles. It has a easy flip top opening and the packaging do looked very modern.

The shampoo itself is clear semi thick gel and smells wonderfully lavender! A little goes a long way and a 20 cent size is enough for my long hair. It foams rather well and I do not need to rewash for the second time. This shampoo indeed cleans my hair well. The only gripe about it is that the scent doesn't last. It comes...and it goes. I find out that it is pretty common for any natural / organic based products.

What I like about this shampoo is that it does not weigh my hair down, it gives volume to my hair and it makes my hair very managable after blow drying. Plus, my scalp feels clean and not oily, even till the next day.

After 2 weeks, though I still enjoy oil free scalp and volume to my hair, I do noticed that my hair is rather dry at the ends. ( I still apply my hair serum after every wash ). However, to solve this problem, I use this shampoo alternately with another one.

Overall

I must say I quite like it. What I really love about this shampoo is that it doesn't give a limp my hair at the end of the day, it give me more volume to my hair and keeping my scalp free from oil and flakes. However, what I don't like is - it will dry out my hair ends and the scent doesn't last. With this, I am giving it a 4 out of 5.

My Experience

The gel is the same consistency with the shampoo, which is clear and semi thick. It foams pretty well and the scent of lavender is strong upon lathering but sadly, it smell doesn't linger.

I do feel that it cleans pretty well...rather too clean for me as I do feel that my skin is squeaky clean. For those who like this feeling, this gel is for you. Unlike Burt's Bees, this shower gel is not moisturizing enough for me. My hubby did tried it and sadly, he didn't like it either.:P

Overall

This shower gel is rather dissapointing to me. I didn't really like it, my husband didn't either and by the looks of it, it will not have it's place in our bathroom. I think I will rate a dissapointing 1 out of 5.

Do you use a separate towel for your face?

I use to practice this habit when I was young but as years go by, I kinda dropped this good habit and resort to the usual '2 in 1 habit', which is using my bath towel for my face as well!

Recently, I adopted back the good old habit when I was experiencing bad breakouts and allergy due to an unsuitable product. ( Read my experince HERE ) I was really concern with the allergy and I will try other methods to not to aggrevate it further.

By using a separate towel for my face, it had helped me to calm the condition and even promotes faster healing! I also noticed that I have fewer breakouts ( especially at my forehead ) and I haven't found any blackheads at my chin area. I know now that I can never go back to using my bath towel for my face EVER again. The thought of it gives me visions of germs and bacteria, eating their way to my pores to find a new home.

I have also discovered that there are several benefits by adopting this good habit, which:

Helps to heal and prevent acne. Conditioners and shampoo's often contain oils and substances that clog pores and causes acne. Imagine this~ you use your bath towel to dry both your hair and body. The remaining substances are then transferred to the towel, which later on, you use it for your face. You now know where is it transferred to, right? Yup, to your face and hence, a new acne is formed.

Lower the risk of re-introducing germs and bacteria to your skin. I usually wash my bath towel once a week and I would usually hang my towel on a rack for it to dry. However, a weeks' time is a party for the germs to manifest to form new homes, right there in your towel.

Helps to prevent blackheads. Blackheads are small composites of dust, oil and bacteria in the pores of the skin. By using separate a towel for your face, you are minimising the chances of these unnecessary buildup.

So, for maintaining a good, clear and healthy skin, I would say go for the "One towel, One face" policy!

I admit that I am! I wasn't that particular last time until I started to use this baby. It have completely change my views and preference on cotton pads. Crazy, I know.

Below are some that I have tried and used before and it is sadly a meh to me.

I used to be trifty when it comes to facial cottons. I am not keen in spending so much on something which I will throw after using it for toner or removing makeup.

However, my views and preference changed when I discovered Suzuran 100% Cotton Puffs. I was pretty amazed on how delicate it feels on my skin when I use it to remove my makeup. The performance is a far cry from those I have used before because the previous ones will either slowly wear off, leaving bits of cotton shreads on my face, with a few strokes.

The thing I like most about this puff is that it is not abrasive to my skin at all. It is gentle enough for not leaving my skin with unslightly red marks.

I absolutely love the smell of lavender..so does my hubs. I find it really soothing when exhaled and it will automatically put me in a calm and relaxing mode. I usually get my staples from L'occitane ( be it lotions, shampoos, etc ) but I do find that their pure essential oil is a bit too expensive for me to purchase.

Lavender oil is an essential oil obtained by distillation from the flower spikes of certain species of lavender.

Mixing them in my homemade hair serum and body oil.
Soothing my scalp and enhance circulation. Pour a drop unto your hair brush ( with bristles ) and comb your hair. ( Your hair will smell nice too! )
As a sleeping aid. Pour two drops unto a cotton pad and place it beside my pillow.
As a disinfectant and air refreshener for my car. Method is the same as above.
As a linen water. Love that my clothes smells like fresh lavender!
Use in a diffuser to freshen and disinfect my room. ( I did this only once as I feel that the smell last longer when placed on the cotton pads )
Mixing them in with my EO Lavender Shower Gel for boosting effects.
( Yet to try ) Pour a few drops on a small piece of cloth and place them in your washing machine to freshen and disinfect your laundry.

DIY: Homemade Hair Serum using Camellia Oil and using it neat for my skin

Recently, my interest in doing my own skincare has grown and to date, I have mixed my own hydrosol and body oil. In this post, I am introducing my own homemade hair serum, which is using camellia oil and lavender essential oil. Apart from using camellia oil for my hair, I also use the oil as a moisturiser for my skin.

I am fond to mix my own skincare ( mostly oil based ) because by doing that, I am rest assured that the products that I am mixing gets superior quality ( minus all the additional addictives ). Secondly, it is far more cheaper than products on shelf. Thirdly, I can always get fresh products everytime, hence the efficacy of the product.

What is Camellia Oil?

Camellia oil is also known as tea seed oil, which is derived from the seeds of the plant called camellia oleifera or camellia sinensis ( camellia japonica ). The seeds of this plant are cold pressed to extract the oil, which is in pale greenish yellow in colour and has a slight aroma.

It is said that camillia oil is high in omega fatty acids, polyphenols and vitamin E and is traditionally used for healing wound and preventing infections.

Benefits of Camellia Oil

Camellia oil is highly beneficial for hair and skin conditional properties and are mainly used in hair oils, soaps and skin products. Camellia oil benefits the hair as it prevents breakage, promotes hair growth and soothe dry scalp conditions. It is easily absorbed into the hair, without making it greasy.

In skincare, it is an excellent moisturizer as it is easily absorbed to the skin, without making it oily. Camellia oil is good for preventing damage from the sun and reducing the signs of aging like wrinkles and age spots. Not only that it beneficial for wound healing and soothing skin irritations, it is said to be effective to fade scars with long term use.

It is great for sensitive skin as it is not found to cause allergic reactions and is not prone to cause acne.

My Experience

For hair

Mix .25 oz of Camellia Essential Oil of your choice ( I use Camellia Sinensis for this time round ) with 2 drops of Lavender Oil ( mine is Lavandula Augustifolia from Bulgaria ) into an amber glass bottle with dropper ( recycled from my Garden of Eden serum ).

Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil for hair :

- Scalp treatment for itchiness, dandruff and even lice!

- Controls oil production and reduces itchy/ flaky scalp

I have been using this homemade hair serum for about a month now and what can I say, I love it! My hair is long and length is over my shoulders and 2 drops is just enough for me. I would usually rub the oil with my hands and comb my hair ends with it after blow drying my hair. From there, I would slowly work my way to the top and gently press both my palms to the crown of my head.

At times, I would like to give my scalp a quick massage by using the tips of my fingers. With the additional lavender oil to it, it gives me a cooling and soothing effect to my scalp and it smells wonderful!

I must say that this serum keeps my flyaway hair managable a whole lot and makes my hair ends really soft. I really like the conditioning properties it gives and I would say this is a keeper for me.

Note: Use this only at your hair ends if you are prone to oily scalp.

For skin

I mainly use the oil neat in the morning, together with my Anti-Aging Oil. With the additional boost of moisturizing properties, I can skip my moisturizer all together. I can safely say that not only does it keep my skin hydrated throughout the day, it also gives me the assurance that it is protecting my skin from the sun too.

Note: I have dry/dehydrated skin so for me, I am comfortable to use it for my whole face. If you have oily or combination skin, use this only on your cheek area or areas that are dry.

My bad case of allergy and what helped me

Some of those who follow my blog may know that I had a bad case of allergy on my face due to a new product which I have been trying. Initially, I was in denial of the fact that it gave me rashes because I adore the ingredients of that product. It all looked very promising. In fact, in the first few days that I used it, it really gave me wonderful plumped up face and it somewhat amped up the radiant look.

To cut the long story short, after trying at least three times on and off again, it is concluded that the product is not suitable for me because it gave me tiny little red rashes on my eyes, chin and nasalabial fold ( near my nose ) area. And it is itchy as well! Not only that it gave me rashes, it cause me to breakouts as well.

This incident brings me back to the same experience I have when I use Dermalogica's Age Smart Skin Resurfacer. It gave me the same tiny little red rashes at the same spot as mentioned above. It was that bad that I had to see a doctor and was given some medication and hydrocartisone cream ( a steroid based cream to reduce inflammation ).

I am not comfortable to using hydrocartisone cream on my face as there are several side effects, which one of them causes thinning and discoloration to the skin. I certainly don't want to see dark patches on my face!
On route to my search for natural based products, I am very thankful that I purchased a great and wonderful cream from Moogoo a few months back and ta-da, this product saved my skin!

My Experience

This semi thick cream comes in a big tube and it have a faint 'fresh leaves' scent to it. For hygenic reasons, I like to use a cotton bud to apply the cream to my face. Once applied to the problematic areas, it does not sting and it is surprisingly soothing.

When the rashes flared up, I usually apply them twice a day and when it is somewhat subsided, I would just need a single application during the day. However, due to the natural ingredients of this product, don't expect it to work in just a day, unlike how other steroid based cream does. For me, it took at least 4 days for it to subside. Once my rashes subsided, I was glad that it did not leave any dark uneven spots and it really look back to normal. ( Please take note that my rashes are not acute, hence the rapid recovery of my rashes )

Besides using on my rashes, I also use it around my nail area, which is subjected to much severe peeling and bleeding. Though the recovery process is not as rapid as my Savlon antiseptic cream, it helps to soothe the inflammed areas greatly.

Overall

This is a great alternative healing cream to those who wants to steer clear of steroid based creams. It helps to soothe and heal my rashes without any harmful side effects. Upon reading MooGoo's website, this cream is safe for babies too! With all the positive points of this product, I am rating this a 5 out of 5.

How many of us actually include applying eye creams as part of our skincare regime? Not many I reckon. I actually started paying attention to my eye area when I started using Marie Veronique Eye Serum sample early this year. Yes, I am a late bloomer!:D

One of the many reasons that I am not fond of putting creams to my eye area is because I dread developing milia seeds. I really dread the thought and secondly, I find that most eye creams comes with a high price tag for a tiny tube or a little small jar. I simply think that paying RM 100 and above is a little bit overwhelming for me.

My Experience

This eye cream is creamy in texure and light. A little amount is good enough for both the eye area and you need to tap lightly so to disperse the cream evenly. Though it is emollient, it doesn't leave my eye greasy or oily, which I adore. You won't be able to see the 'well rested' nor 'hydrated' effects immediately or even the next day. But I can say that you will see it after 1 week of using it, both in the morning and night.

I have been using this eye cream, close to 1 1/2 months now and I like how this eye cream is nurturing my eyes. Yes, my eye area is better hydrated and I do noticed slight lightening on my dark circles, about 10%. Though the slightly deep line on my right eye is still there, I can say that it have soften it a little. Can I even add that my eyes don't look tired or sunk down anymore? Below are the before and after pictures.

Overall

Though the results and the changes are not dramatic, I like that this eye cream gives good moisturisation to my eye area. My eyes don't look tired as before and I am glad to see slight lightening on my dark circles. This cream can't take away wrinkles or deep lines completely but it sure can soften it a little. Plus, I think this eye cream is very afforable as it does contain some pretty good ingredients. With this, I am giving this product a 4 out of 5.

I was very keen to try out Burt's Bees Radiance Facial Cleanser after reading some good reviews over the net and at Makeupalley, it was rated 4.0 out of 5. I was surprised too that this product was out of stock in Malaysia when I stopped over at their store a few months ago. ( I am thinking...this product must be good )

I left my contact with the sales people over at the store so that I can quickly grab them once it arrive. Till date, I have yet to receive a call from them and it is unfortunate that I found out the stocks have arrived in their stores for sometime already. I am quite 'tiffed' that no one at Burt's Bees is even bothered to let me know. Oh well, I might as well take my money to somewhere else where it's appreciated and in this case, I decided to purchase it online through Milangro Trading in Singapore.

My Experience

The cleanser is milky with thin consistency and it contained a small amount of micro beads as well. Though it has a nice smell, I personally find it a bit overpowering, especially coming from a 100% natural product. One pump of the cleanser is sufficient enough to create a nice lather. It also feels nice when I cleanse my face with this but I have to say that the micro beads is too sparse to do any exfoliation. After rinsing, I feel that this cleanser tends to be more stripping than Madara and it leaves my skin squeaky clean ( which I don't really like ). Though my skin did not feel tight after using it, I feel that it is dry to touch.

I continued on for the next 5 days and come a conclusion that this cleanser does not suit my skin type at all. Why? As I continued on, it really left my cheeks tight and dry and I found a pimple at my lower left cheek :( Since then, I have passed this cleanser to my hubby, who seemed fine when using this.

Overall

Sad to say, this cleanser is totally too stripping for my dehydrated skin. My face is left dry to touch and it gave me a pimple as a result. With this, I would rate this product 1 out of 5.

Update: I think Burt's Bees in US have discontinued this product as it is not available at their website anymore.

Here are some common notions about what we need to do to keep our skin vibrant and healthy. Just answer true or false, then see if your answers agree with ours.

1) High SPF ratings are your best protection against sun damage.

The problem with a sunscreen with a high SPF rating is that, because it allows you to stay out in the sun longer without getting burned, you may feel that you have not incurred sun damage when in fact you may have exposed yourself to the more insidious damage caused by longer wave-length UVA rays. Risks from UVA over-exposure are potentially of more concern than the risks associated with simple sunburn occasioned by over-exposure to UVB rays. See #2 below for more discussion of UVA rays.

Two better ways to protect yourself are:
1) MAKE SURE YOU GET BROAD-SPECTRUM UVA/UVB PROTECTION.
2) Remember that sunburn is your natural alarm system–red skin tells you that you’ve had enough and it’s time to cover up.

2) You need to wear sunscreen year round, not just when you go to the beach.

Consider this: about 95% of wrinkles come from UVA exposure, and UVA exposure is a dawn until dusk, all season affair. The longer-wave-length rays penetrate windows and clouds, so even being inside on a rainy day does not afford you complete protection.
Fortunately you generally don’t need as much sunscreen in the wintertime as on a day at the beach (with a day on the ski slopes being the exception). Just remember that UVA =aging, so choose a moisturizer with broad spectrum protection. This is more important than the SPF rating–an SPF of 15 to 20 is just fine.

I am always on a look out for anti aging serums and while I was web shopping at Garden of Wisdom's site, this serum stood out among the rest, mainly because it contains Argan Oil and Niacinimide. While I am hesitant to purchase the full bottle, I asked if I can purchase a 15ml bottle. I am happy that the good people at GoW is able to accomodate that. A bottle of 15ml would be able to give me at least 2 months of usage to see the full potential of the product. Before I proceed with my review, here is the quick product description taken from Garden of Wisdom.

My Experience

I started incorporating this serum into my night regime in the beginning of July and application is after toner. The serum is light orange in colour with a semi-thick consistency and smells like mix berries. A pea size is sufficient for the whole face and neck area and upon application, this serum tends to be slightly sticky. I just need to pat my face gently to make sure all the serum is fully absorbed before applying my anti-aging oil.

The next morning, I noticed that my face looked fresh. My cheeks are bouncy and smooth and this serum leaves my face very hydrated. I continued on for the next two days and it's giving me the same results every morning. My face was looking a little dull and this serum seemed to amp up my face!

However, my enthusiam died down on the forth day when I experienced breakouts on my cheek, chin and forehead area. I am not sure if this serum is the cause of it or that my body is experiencing some hormone imbalance due to my period. I stopped using this serum and would only continue when my face get back to normal.

After 2 weeks, I started this again and on the first day, it seemed alright. However, on the 2nd day, I noticed I have tiny bumps along my chin and nasalabial fold ( near my nose ) area. Then, I knew that this serum is not suited for my skin type.

Overall

Sadly, this serum does not cut out for me even though I love the ingredients and the morning after effects that it gave me. I am rating this 2 out of 5, 2 for the potential ingredients in it and minus 3 for causing me breakouts.

Review and DIY: Garden of Wisdom Neroli and Rose Damascan Hydrosol.

What are Hydrosols? Hydrosols are sometimes referred as floral waters and is the aromatic water that remains after producing an essential oil via steam or water distillation. The water which is used for the oil distillation has a wonderful aroma and even has some medicinal properties in it. Hydrosol also offers some therapeutic benefits and is also widely used for aromatherapy purposes.

Hydrosols are versatile to use and can be added to creams or lotions in replacement of water. Some may use it as facial toners, body spritz or as a wetting agent with clays as your homemade mask.

Neroli Hydrosol

Neroli is one of the most desirable natural aroma used in skincare products. It's delicate floral scent makes it light and feminine that promotes happy feelings and relieving depression and anxiety. In short, it is calming. In skincare, it works as a gentle yet effective astringent, helping in balancing skin.

Neroli Hydrosol is a good, less expensive alternative to those who want to enjoy the benefits of neroli. It makes a good toner for mature and oily prone skin as it has anti-bacterial properties.

Rose Damascan Hydrosol

Rose Damascan Hydrosol acts as a humectant ( retaining or preserving moisture ) that helps to balance the skin. It is suitable for normal, dry, sensitive, mature, dehydrated and combination skin. It helps to regulate sebum and with it's anti-baterial properties, it helps to keep acne at bay. It also helps in tighten pores too! In skin care, many use this ingredient for anti-aging products. For aromatheraphy uses, Rose Hydrosol is balancing, calming, rejuvenating, cooling and sensual too.

I am currently using Dermalogica's Multi Active Toner and would like to change to a more natural alternative. I have heard and read that many are using hydrosols as a replacement to their normal toners. Since I have dry, dehydrated and occasionally oily T-zone, I would opt for rose damascan hydrosol. Plus, I like the anti-aging and pore tightening properties it gives. However, I am also drawn to neroli because of the fragrance and the balancing act it gives.

After some research, I find that many DIY-ers mix both neroli and rose hydrosol together. So I have decided to do the same too! Besides, this is a 20% dupe of MVO Anti Aging Mist...*shhhhhh*.

My Experience

Yay! I did my very first, no brainer DIY hydrosol by mixing 50% of neroli and 50% rose damascan hydrosol into a amber spritzer bottle.*Clap,clap,clap* Now, who says we can't do our own skincare at home?

I started using my own DIY hydrosol for a month now and I am liking it. I use this every night as a face mist before applying my facial oils because I like the cooling and rejuvenating sensation it gives. By the way, all hydrosols are advised to be kept refrigerated to keep it fresh because it does not contain any preservatives.

During the first week when I started using it, I do feel that after a few minutes, my high cheeks area would be tight. I initially thought that this is a drying effect. What I come to know is that it is the pore tightening effects that I am experiencing. Yay! Pore tightening is working, thanks to the rose damascan hydrosol.

Truth to be told, I am not a big fan of rose scented products. However, I am glad that the scent of the rose hydrosol is not too overwhelming. For the neroli, yes, I am in love with the scent! It is wonderfully floral ( not the pungent type of floral ) and feminine.

Overall

I think this an effective and inexpensive toner to use and this is going to be my staple. For a 60ml face mist, which cost me about US 8.00 / RM 25.00, good to use for 6 months, I think this is a steal! Though this mix is a 20% dupe of the MVO Anti Aging Mist, I think this is worth it too. Because of this a wallet friendly alternative and an effective toner for my skin type, I am giving this a 5 out of 5.

To those who want to try this at home or to any aspiring DIY-ers, do give this a go. ( I get all my raw ingredients from Garden of Wisdom )

When I purchase my body oil from Weleda a few months back, I was happy to receive this sample size body wash from them too. I was torn between the Lavender and Sea Buckthorn but later settled for the latter.

My Experience

I am quite satisfied with the ingredients listing as they contain most natural ingredients, minus all the SLS's and parabens. Instead of the usual gel like texture, this shower gel comes in a milky wash and what really impressed me is the very nice scent. I remembered smelling this scent a few years back but I can't remember which brand. All I know is...it smelled luxurious!

Unlike any other washes that contain a whole lot of SLS, this wash does not foam much. I like it that this wash leaves my skin feeling clean and soft. It does not make my skin dry and the best part is, the smells still lingers on your body, leaving you the good pampered feeling!

Honestly, I am still saving whatever is left in the tube because this wash is quite addictive. You want to use it again and again! This is a very good wash if you want to pamper yourself to one nice luxurious bath. I will definately reconsider to buy this in the full tube but the price is rather steep for a body wash. It is priced at RM63 for a tube of 200ml.

When Burt's Bees in Malaysia were having their buy 2 free 1 promotion, I quickly made a dash to their nearest retail store and bought myself two of my current favourite baby bee body wash and I grab their baby oil too, since I am a lover of body oils.

My Experience

I just love body oils and though I ran out of my current loved Weleda Pomegranate Body Oil, I really don't mind purchasing this Baby Bee Nourishing Oil to see how it compares with Weleda.

This oil is light yellow in colour and it is a slightly heavier oil compares to Weleda. There is a strong scent of vanilla, with hints of honey and the scent can linger on till the next morning. Though it takes a slightly longer time to absorb to skin, I would say that this oil is a great massaging oil and does not make your skin feeling greasy.

As to the product description says, it does it's job in nourishing my skin. My skin feels like a baby and very moisturised the next day. Personally, I would say that it's more moisturising than Weleda's. However, do bear in mind that both Weleda and Baby Bee oil is with different properties. Weleda is more of an anti-oxidant oil, wherelse Baby Bee is more of a moisturising oil.

Overall

I have to admit that the more I use this oil, the more I am fond of it. I just love how it really moisturise my skin well and the scent is so comforting. I like it that it is safe and 100% natural. I am also assured that I can even use this on my niece too, who is experiencing some dry and itchy skin. She love the scent and she would always say that she smells like a bee! May I also add that the price is reasonable and it is a great oil for both children and adult. With this, I am giving this product a 5 out of 5.

My July Haul-EO Shampoo, Burt's Bees Radiance Cleanser and Pure Lavender Essential Oil

I made a lot of hauls recently...and I did another haul this week too :) My hubby thinks I am nuts for making so much purchases online and my reasoning is that products are cheaper by 20% if made online. Really it is! I find it hard sometimes to purchase an item that I like in Malaysia because the price is fairly high and I would only purchase if they have a sale or a promotion. ( I am sure most ladies who are residing here would agree with me )

Another reason that I prefer online purchasing is that I wish to try some products that are not made available here in Malaysia. It is fairly hard to find good natural or organic products here, much less reputable brands. The only way for me to go is to purchase online.

Of course there are many online websites that you can purchase from, but one have to wise to purchase from a reputable online shop with good shipping charges and good shipping track records too. It also helps that they have good customer services ( especially to international customers ) and that their products are reasonably priced after conversion.

Now, coming back to my haul...I made my purchases from Milagro Trading, an online shop from Singapore. Their product offerings are rather good, especially their range of carrier and essential oils. ( If comparing with Garden of Wisdom, of course, GoW will be much cheaper) However, I find that the essential oils from Milagro Trading are of a better quality than GoW. Below are my hauls:

1) EO Everyday Shampoo in French Lavender
2) Burt's Bees Radiance Cleanser
3) Lavender Bulgarian Essential Oil
4) EO Soothing Shower Gel in Lavender ( Complimentary )

The products are rather easy to purchase through their site but you would have to create an account beforehand. Payments can be made through bank transfer, cheque or credit card payment but I prefer to make my payment through Pay Pal. Their shipping charges are reasonable too, starting at SGD 8.50 for Malaysia.

It took about 8 days for my package to arrive, which I think is fairly good, though it is the same timing too for my orders from US. My products arrive in a package mail, which is double wrapped with a UPS bubble envelope. All the pumps or any openings is secured with tape, to avoid any leakage. My lavender essential oil is the only item is fully bubble wrapped. I personally find that boxed package is better but of course, it cost more. Well, this is just my personal preference.

Review:Oil Cleansing Method with MooGoo Oil Cleanser for Dry Skin

I've heard a lot about oil cleansing method ( OCM ) from the internet and gathered that many had great results by using this. Some claimed that they have clear, dewy-looking skin and blackheads are gone by using OCM. This cleansing method is that the oil will dissolve the oil within your skin that has hardened with impurities by massaging. In short, OCM is a deep cleansing method. When I heard that it can remove impurities or blackheads, I am all for it! I have really bad congested blackheads at my nose area and I am really hoping that OCM will help me to solve this problem.

Looking for a cleansing oil with natural oils are hard to find in Malaysia and I have known some ladies that resort to doing their own concoctions. However, I was glad that I've found one cleansing oil and it's the cleansing oil from MooGoo.

Product Description

This version has the lowest percentage of drawing oils and highest percentage of moisturising oils for dry skin.

Directions: The Oil Cleanser can be used in two ways:

For everyday washing, massage some oil onto the face while showering or washing. Allow a minute for the oils to work into the pores. Rinse off with water. No other cleanser should be required. Apply a moisturiser afterward as normal. Note: A toner should not be required as there is some astringent effect with the oils.

For deep cleansing to help clear problem skin, massage the oil onto the face. Apply a warm wash cloth over the face to steam open the pores and allow the cleansing oils to sterilize the pores. Wash off with cold water and apply a moisturiser as normal.

Ingredients: Jojoba Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Castor Oil, Avocado Oil, Vitamin E, Petitgrain Oil, Carrot Seed Oil, Lavender Oil, Palmarossa Oil

My Experience

I've decided to try the OCM during my first try using about 2-3 pumps and massage unto my face, targeting my problematic areas ( nose and chin area ) for 10 minutes. The smell is really divine and I feel like I am in the spa! After 10 minutes, I use a warm cloth to cover my face and steam for 2 minutes. Then I use the same cloth to wipe my face, rinse with warm water and steam again for another 2 minutes. Repeat the final step again to ensure that face is clear of oils. Tone and moisturise as normal.

I personally feel that this method is too time consuming and took me about 30 minutes from start to finish. I can't vouch that my blackheads are removed by this method but I do find that it is slightly clearer and it gave me a shiny nose. I did notice that most of my whiteheads are gone too and this method is good to remove them without using an extractor. However, it didn't give me fairer and radiant skin which I would normally get from my normal exfoliating method.

I also notice that this method do draws out most of my oil from my face. Though my skin did not feel tight after washing, my facial oils seems to absorb rapidly when I apply to my face and I need to add additional moisturiser to keep my face moisturised.

Overall

I have mixed review about this. I like it that somewhat, it helps to clear some of my impurities but I dislike it that it is time consuming, did not brighten my skin tone and left my skin a tad dry. For the Oil Cleansing Method, I would give a rating of 3 out of 5. However, for MooGoo Cleansing Oil, I would give a 3.5 out of 5. I love the smell and I think this works as a normal cleanser too, but I have to double cleanse with my cleanser to remove the excess oil. One problem I have with this is the packaging of the product. The bottle comes with a pump and there is leakage at the neck of the bottle. They really do need to relook into their packaging.

No oil soluble Vitamin C forms that are less effective or liquids that can cause the Vitamin C to oxidize.

I have heard a lot of the potential of L-Ascorbic Acid ( Vitamin C ), which increases the levels of collagen in the skin, prevents and repairs damage from hydroxyl free radicals. Here's what MVO have to say about L-Ascorbic Acid:

Vitamin C in its water-soluble form (l-ascorbic acid) is extremely effective as an anti-oxidant, and it also repairs past damage, lightens sun spots and stimulates collagen production. The problem with Vitamin C is that it oxidizes rapidly in liquid, becoming a prooxidant, creating free radicals rather than neutralizing them. Skin care companies have tried to resolve the l-ascorbic acid problem by replacing it with oil-soluble forms (Vitamin C-esther, ascorbyl palmitate), however studies show that these versions are much less effective than l-ascorbic acid. MVO solves this problem by delivering Vitamin C in powder form and in capsules. This allows you to dispense the exact amount you need and ensures that it's fresh each time.

I had wanted to try out DIY Vit C serum all the while, which a lot of DIYers have amazing results with it. Because L-Ascorbic Acid is unstable and oxidises quickly, I still doubt myself on mixing this at home and I don't like wastage if the serum is not used up or if kept improperly. However, I am glad that MVO have found another alternative to apply this, just to ensure that it is fresh each time upon use.

My Experience:

For this sample, there are only 2 capsules in the vial bottles and I have only 2 times to try if this is suitable for me. For the 1st capsule, I mixed the powder in with 1 pump of my skin lightening serum and apply the mixture after my Anti Aging Oil Plus. This supplement seemed to leave behind a slight powdery residue on your face, which I do not have an issue with it. The next morning, I like the effects of this supplement as really brightens my face and do feel that my cheeks are somewhat bouncy. I tried it the 2nd time again, a few weeks after, and this time, I mixed it with a pea size if the moisture serum. Again, I am happy with the results the day after, leaving me with clear, smooth and even tone skin.

I will definately purchase this in my next order!

My Experience:

I tried to pour out the contents to a pea size amount from the vial bottle and only succeeded with much forceful shaking. The serum is not runny but in mid consistency and it smells fresh and nice. I use this before the oil and upon application, it tends to be sticky on your face. I do not have an issue with this because the effect is almost the same as applying my hyaluronic acid serum. With this, I just need to use a pump of my Anti Aging Oil ( without adding my Rosehip oil ) and followed by my skin lightening serum. This moisture serum does leave your skin hydrated throughout the night and giving you a bright and plump skin the day after.

I tried this again some weeks after and this time, I mixed in my skin lightening vitamin C supplement and again, not only it leaves my skin hydrated, it evens out my skin tone and gives me bouncy cheeks.

I will consider to purchase this in full bottle in replacement to my skin lightening serum because the latter cost too much for me. I like it when I mix this with the skin lightening vitamin C and I would personally use this probably 3 times a week.

DIY Yukuko Tanaka Anti Aging Face Coutouring Massage

I came to know about this face contouring massage through Viva Woman and subsequently, from Epicbeautyguide, that did a video translated in English. I find this very, very interesting as I usually have my face massages from my monthly facials and would like to incorporate massages as part of my skincare routine at the comfort of my own home.

Yukuko Tanaka is a Japanese Beauty Expert and here are the videos that presents her anti-aging, face contouring massage. This massage is believed to reduce and prevent wrinkles, improves sagging skin, minimizing pore size, emiminates puffy and under-bag eyes and improving skin tone and texture.

I have been doing this routine for almost 2 months now and I do see results! It's rather unbelievable actually. My face is much sharper, no flabby bits along jaw line and my face seemed firmer ( and my neck too ). As I use facial oils daily in my regime, I have heard that massaging your facial oils gives better penetration to your skin.

I really have to thank Viva Woman for introducing this wonderful massage by Yukuko Tanaka because to date, I know my face and skin have improved too by this. Though there are about 11-12 steps in this massage, I have to confess that I only manage to do 4 steps each time. Though it's a 'short cut massage' version, it still works for me. However, I have to remind myself again next time of the steps, so that I can see the full results through it.
